Primal Scream - Shoot Speed: More Dirty Hits

variety of Mixmag covermounts from the past year

Chemical Brothers - Dig Your Own Hole

Kasabian - Kasabian

Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine (my God is this ever the gayest goth-dance 80s record ever!!!! Love it. Hah!)

Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile (if only it was one really good disc...)

The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free (threw it in for something different)

Basement Jaxx - Kish Kash (likewise)

Change of Heart - Steelteeth

24 Hour Party People - Official Soundtrack

King Unique - Essential Mix 10/31/04

Uhhhh.... basically anything that looks appealing and is right in front of me at the computer. Or that I haven't listened to in a while.

X-D Hey now, you're treading on my old stomping grounds! I wouldn't say Pretty Hate Machine is in the same league as goth - maybe goth crossover... but it's more industrial than anything else. Same black feathers but not the same flock, you know? And it's definitely not gay goth, tell that to the kids of the industrial revolution... old farts like myself! ;) hehe. You want true gay goth-dance 80's try the Cure!! *wink*

Agreed with your thought on The Fragile. That record was... meticulous. Good in some parts, laggy in others - exhausting to listen to. I know some die hard NIN fans that thought the record was brilliant, but the record seemed to divide up the fan base, sort of alienated the older fans. It has sparks of brilliance but to me it felt like too much a diversion from the old familiar NIN I was acquainted with.

What's making the rounds in my disc changer lately?

Cocteau Twins - Victorialand (insanely gorgeous to listen to)

Kasabian - Kasabian (I haven't been this amped about a new band in ages)

U2 - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (still trying desperately to love it, some songs on there I can seriously do without)

Messiah - 21st Century Jesus (this one takes me back to those long ago weekends when I'd put my hands in the air and wiggle em like I just don't care)

Chemical Brothers - Singles Bonus (I need not explain)

Fatboy Slim - On the Floor at the Boutique (makes me wish I was going out)

Spiritualized - Fucked Up Inside (great live record, and I still can't find myself an original copy!)

Chems - Live in Chile (at this very moment)

Underworld - Beacoup Fish

Underworld - Second Toughest in the Infants

Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

Bjork - Debut

Groove Armada - The Best Of

That's about all I've been listening to in the past week or so, except I recently listened to ALL of my Chems CDs that I have backed up on two mp3 CDs, while on the go between different tutoring jobs all over Hong Kong - fun stuff. As you may be able to tell, I recently completed my collection of all of Underworld's "main" albums (i.e. nothing in their 'pre-electronica' days, if you know what I mean), and anType was right in saying they are all must-have - brilliant records.

I've got Beck-Sea Change on now, and I like to get that out a lot for a listen - it's nice first thing in the morning, or any time of day.

Any Beck fans here? Really interested to see what his new album will be like, see if it'll be a nice breath of fresh air from a lot of other crap that's being released... same with Chems, of course!

I have Mellow Gold and Odelay. Mellow Gold was a good debut, there was nothing quite like it when the record came out. Odelay is a solid record, through and through. I really dig it - good stuff.

I really enjoy what he's done with Air. Great remix of Sexy Boy that gave the song a goofy sense of humor. When I first heard he was going to collab with Air on 10,000 hz Legend, I thought his folky style was a bit too quirky for the laid back duo. Then again, 10,000hz Legend was a pretty quirky, experimental record.

I also saw him perform in 1999. Unfortunately I was too brained out and melted from the Chemicals and Underworld to remember much of his performance. :-//

Listen to 'Kinda I Want To' and 'The Only Time' and tell me again how it's not gay.... ;-) Especially when you put the ambiguity of Trent's sexual history into context.... ('Sin' is still awesome though; I like 'Ringfinger', too)

As much as I love old NIN ('Broken' is my fave), it was the more progressive elements of the Fragile that I enjoy the most. The album is a sonic masterpiece; if only some of the songwriting had been better. I really noticed this week the dance music elements in the album though. 'Starfuckers' actually has a jungle/d'n'b skitter-beat going on before the "big dumb rock riff" (trademark) of the chorus comes in (props for the Kiss "Alive" sample at the end of the track though). I'd spin 'Complication' if I was a DJ.

And Alan Moulder's presence really cements the album's My Bloody Valentine influence, especially on TDTWWA.

I think a single album version would have had a better "narrative" to it, like The Downward Spiral (although perhaps not so much of a concept). My semester break goal is to come up with the "proper" tracklisting for a single-disc "The Fragile". I'll keep you updated. 8)

Now if only I could get enough time away from papers and exams to watch the DVD....
