I like the video for the Humma Humma one. It has a slight hokey quality but I dig it. I like the choreography and I am a eternal sucker for Indian ladies' garb - the fabric and the way the clothing flows and sways is the embodiment of femininity...
Anyway - yeah, the music!!
Chaiyya Chaiyya is really cool (Inside Man was a great flick, btw) It's cool because when I saw it not too long ago I remember kinda groovin to the song during the opening credits, thinking "I'm digging this, I wonder who it is."
I really like Jadoo - the song is as sexy as the video is corny (and I mean it in a good way, the song, not the video).
Overall so far the songs are really great, they have almost a haunting quality about them. The traditional aspects of the songs, the near hypnotic percussion and vocals make for a seductive blend.
Sometimes world beat/world music can be so hit and miss, especially when your ears are conditioned to only certain kinds of sounds/music. At least for me sometimes. But this goes to show that like anything else, gems can be discovered through guidance. :)

whack. seeing a r rehman being discussed on the chems forum. i've really loved his debut work (damn, that was like 12 yrs back - bombay, roja), but haven't been following him, since he did get very hindi music commercial also. n funny i was just having a discussion like i mentioned on some other thread with a friend who sings for silk route bout him just a few nights back when he was in blr. one of my best friends sessions for em, n both bands were in town playin a gig. n this guy mohit, he's producing some music for some film with rehman, n he couldn't stop raving about him, he's been doin the rounds of bollywood meeting lots of producers, n he says he couldn't even sit with some of those jerks for more than ten mins, but he was all in awe for rehman. this guy's sure big here, n abroad to some extent too. i remember mohit sayin he could be in delhi n call the president's office n say he wants a meeting, n he'd get it, it's good to see a real musician make it so big, n commercially in the otherwise very very sucky hindi music/ bollywood world.
ya i was in India when Roja and Bombay came out. The movies sucked but the soundtrack was what grabed everyone's attention. His recent stuff involves a lot of jazz influence and use of synthesizers and other electronic sounds...yet he still manages to fuck around with traditional indian instruments like tabla, sitar and those precussions that he produces are great and even sound better live.
Bollywood in the past couple of years hasn't really created anything original, with everyone doing remixes of old tunes, some are fine but some are just ear pain.
Rahman is really down to earth and is classically trained not like some other assholes in the bollywood music industry who just copy the western pop songs...
it is kindda weird discussing this guy on the chem forum but what the hell anything goes here as long as it is remotely associated with music...lol...
He is doing couple of movies lately, can't wait to hear him and hopefully your friend mohit will be on it. ->

they do these amazin amazin totally fucked up covers of massive attack/ mixed with roxanne, some prodigy, n that kinda stuff live. think they'r the only band who'r big n do that kinda stuff live in this country.
ah yes, my friend chintan's doin some amazin stuff live now with his freshly discovered collabs, i passed a song to mx chem, it's still under construction, but he's got some ace stuff coming up. he was over the weekend n monday, n the kinda stuff he mixed live for me using his notebook was insane. he also fucked around a lot with my chems n other music. all live in my living room. :)
