New UK singles chart
(Monday February 28, 2005 12:45 AM)
The British Phonographic Organisation (BPI) has announced that a combined physical and digital singles chart will be published on April 17th.
Reported by industry magazine Music Week, it is expected that the move will transform the UK singles market.
Speaking to the magazine, BPI executive chairman Peter Jamieson said that the new-look chart would offer a far better reflection of consumer tastes.
He explained: "It will be the most significant change in the way the chart is made up for many, many years and it reflects the way consumers are now buying music."
Digital downloads have now dramatically closed the gap on physical sales.
Last week there were 342,000 downloads, compared to 396,000 sales of physical formats. The Chemical Brothers currently top the official Download Chart with "Galvanize".
However, the move to merge the two charts was delayed from a proposed launch on March 20th because independent labels are still under-represented on digital services.
Music Week reports that of the 26 independent releases featured in the physical singles Top 75 a week ago, six were not available on any of the leading iTunes, OD2 and Napster services, seven were only on one and 10 tracks were on two.
On this, Omar Maskatiya from the Official Charts Company commented: "It became clear over the first couple of months of this year the indies wouldn't be reflected as they are in the physical chart at the moment.

don't mention DJ tzi :x people buying this shit are those typical "party animals": mallorca, lots of cheap alcohol and bad music :x
it is just logical to combine the 2 charts... if that would have been done earlier it would have made galvanize number 1 for several weeks. still number one in download charts but only 27 now in "physical" charts

Hm. On a serious note, I think kids under 18 should NOT be allowed to buy music. They always buy crap, they make chart look crap...everything kids do is crap.
^That doesn't apply to all kids, of course.
Hey, what's that? Oh, right, fuck you!!!! ;) ;)

I certainly bought crap until I was about 16, when I picked up surrender (5.5 years ago 8O ). It wasn't totally crap, but I did like a lot of crap. I didn't buy the albums/singles, I got compilations like "NOW". Looking back on it, it's like every day I wake up I'm so glad I bought Surrender. Converted me onto real music!

probably 3 weeks? it was in top 10 for a month and same time no. 1 in download charts so that might be possible.
i have to admit that i bought crap when i was younger, as well - although i started listening to the chemical brothers back when i was 13. but, as it has been mentioned before, that kid years' early crap music brings memories, good and bad. and not to forget, i grew up with this. part of my life
