I had my car broken into once about 14 years ago, when I went to the movies. I foolishly had a huge carrying case with 75 cassettes in the back seat, and my car stereo was a really nice Kenwood I paid a lot of money for. The unit itself was was removable but it was a pain to lug it around, it would get all banged up. The one time I didn't decide to take it with me, look what happened. My window was broken, and the thieves must've used a crowbar to remove the entire stereo kit from my dash. And all those cassettes were gone. I had a few collectibles in there, a few bootlegs that were really hard to come by (I bought them at a street market in Glasgow) plus a bunch of mix tapes my brother made for me so there was the whole sentimental attachment to a lot of these items.

But in time, everything got replaced including those bootlegs. What really irked me the most, besides the fact that the thieves got away with something for paying absolutely nothing, was the feeling that my privacy was invaded, that feeling of being violated.
be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle

I had parts of my CD collection stolen twice. The first time was terrible as personally autographed CD were gone.

After that, I decided to write my name on the reverse of the back insert, under the insert tray, so that it's not easily seen.

So, when the CD were stolen for the second time, I decided to look around secondhand shops for my collection.

I walk into one, and find a CD of mine, with my name under the tray. So I go up to the guy, and tell him, that it's my CD, and has been stolen from me. (I had everything catalogued and a full list was given to Police). And the guy tells me, that they bought it off a pawnbroker nearby. So I went to the pawnbroker, and what should I find? His entire stock is my CD collection. By this stage I was nearly loosing it, I was either gonna burst into tears or kill him. (He knew full well that they were stolen).

So I inform him that all those CDs were mine, and that he should pull them off the shelf. (We're talking 150 CDs here). And he begins by saying how do I know? I can't do that. And whatever. (By this stage I had the Police on their way). So once the cops show up, I show them my name on a few CDs, and they tell the guy, that the CDs are being confiscated as they belong to someone else.

Once they were all photographed, I was happily reunited with part of my collection.

I later learned that the pawnbroker, paid 1 dollar for each CD. Some of those I paid big money for.

Needless to say as a consequence of my pedantic cataloging and writing my name everywhere, the thief was caught and prosecuted.
