No one seems to be commenting on the last track of PTB, Surface to Air. I think the track is fantastic and practically made the album for me. Any body else??

I think it's amazing. I've never really been that much of a fan of the Private Psychadelic Reel (I'm going to get flamed for that) alright so it's good at the end of a gig but I wouldn't think of it as an anthem.

Surface to Air hits all the right notes live but I think the studio version would benefit from not having those vocoded samples at the start and from being a couple of minutes longer.

I think its one of the most powerfull lovely tracks they have ever made. I reall prefere it to Star Guitar. I think the ending is good, because you don't expect it to end suddenly like that.

i can see what your saying but i doubt you said that about the end of AONO, i am very dissapointed with the surface to air finish, very dissapointed indeed.

Speaking od Surface to Air (probably the best track on PTB to me), I've just listened again to "The modern Age" by the strokes yesterday, and i have to admit the similarity in the melodic progression is surprising. I don't think they made it on purpose, tho.

The ending of this track feels rather cheap and inspirationless. Luckily I mixed it into Rize Up on my CD-R copy.

I think it's a nice ending actually and I don't see what's wrong with the vocoder voices at the start. (what is a vocoder anyhow?) The voice makes me feel happy like the rest of the song. I think they could have done more with the middle where they have that... like harp or whatever... play a little more. Methinks the harp is cool.

Wow, I can understand not liking the ending but to say the ending is cheap and lacks inspiration is a bit of a low blow. I think if they wanted to draw out the ending then they could have quite easily. Epic endings are something, it seems, Tom and Ed could probably do in their sleep - I don't mean to denigrate their skills at crafting lovely and inspiring outtros, just pointing out they are that good at what they do.

I think the end of Surface To Air takes you by surprise, for sure. It's not your typical drawn out Chemical outtro. But it does create an image in the mind's eye - something the Chems are also [i]that[i/] good at. Like what's been said in various threads involving the Surface to Air ending debate - it's like drawing your breath in after holding it for so long, like taking all that air in your lungs when you reach the surface.

Nice description, but IMHO it still sucks.

Not to get bitchy and pick on you, but so do baseless comments such as this. It cheapens the forum, and does little to inspire creative debate.

You don't have to loooooooooooooooove everything the Chems do, but the negativity here as of late is getting very tiring. Back up what you say, good or bad.

I hate to bring it up AGAIN but if we're talking about disappointing endings you can't go past Pioneer Skies. Surface to Air goes for about what, 6 or 7 minutes? Theres room in there for a big intro, build up, climax, break down [best part of the song IMO] and an outro, sorta like a 2nd climax. Pioneer Skies is build up, build up, build up, thud, piano sound. I guess what i'm trying to say is that by comparison the ending to Surface to Air is perfect for the song, and is exactly the way it was meant to be. And hell, it could have been worse, it could have just ended with a piano sound...

If you listen lil chick, you will find that it just cuts out, unexpectedly, leaving only the sound of your CD player going back to its off position.

Why? It sucks. It's a cheap ending. Like they were out of ideas. Or didn't want to work on it anymore. Maybe it was stress, or a sudden urge for hamburgers, who knows? Imho It's not the way to end a huge building fucker like that. I stick with cheap.
