Hi

I was talking a bit about piracy in another thread but i'd thougt i might aswell start a new one about it.

I would like to hear you're thoughts of it and how it will change things. I would also like to know how much you download and how common it is in your country etc, i think piracy is a really interesting phenomen and i think it will change our views on copyright etc.

-----------------------------------------------------

Allmost every byte on my computer is illegally downloaded... Games, music, movies, programs etc.

And allmost all of my friends are doing the same thing. I'm 15 years old and live in Sweden btw, and here it's a really really common thing.

I'm a communist and I believe all property is theft, so I have no qualms about stealing anything.

that's all I have to say about that.

Tried it. Good for apps, but p2p is better for music

a while a go I wrote this long rant about why internet piracy was good for the gaming industry, as it would eventually make the only profitable games massively multiplayer online games, that would require a monthly membership fee and constantly upgraded content in order to attract and retain players, but I don't remember what I did with it.

I generally don't support music piracy, music means enough to me that if there's a band I love I want to support them in any way possible (outside of going to shows, because I don't get to do that very often these days). Besides, if I'm going to enjoy an album, I want the whole package.

Movie downloads? It depends. Half the time there's hardly any film I'd want to blow that kind of money on. We rent a lot of movies too - there are no royalties on rented films anymore than there are royalties on checked out books from the library. Movies are already bought and paid for, the rentals are profit from the shop you're renting from.

Games? Don't really have much an opinion to be honest. But knowing that there's a lot of hard work that goes into these games, and knowing there's a lot of people working on them doing the grunt work that aren't paid well (Blizzard being one company that pays its employees very little considering the amount of money the comapny makes) it would be nice to support this industry in some way. However, $50 for a game that you'll get about 6 hours out of doesn't seem very reasonable imo.

I was thinking of something the other evening in regards to piracy. Here's the deal - we have a cable package that costs us a little over $100 per month. We get cable phone, internet, and cable tv. It's bought and paid for legally every month. Say we go on the intnernet and download an episode of Family Guy (I'm trying to boycott most things Fox oriented and absolutely refuse to tune into Fox television... but I love Family Guy) - technically that's illegal. HOWEVER, is it any worse for me to download Family Guy since I've paid for cable services, is downloading a tv show any worse than say, using Tivo? Hmmm.
be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle

I downloaded and I continue to download a lot of music illegally.

But I allways buy what I really like. For example, I'd never have known the Chemical brothers if a friend of mine didn't make me a copy of Dig Your Own Hole for me some years ago. And today I have all the albums.

I download music because what I hear on radio in France is shit. Downloading allows me to know new artists and genres which I would never have heared about on radio. And when I think the music is cool, I buy it.

I think that culture should be free for all... When i'm waiting for a new album, i first download it (though it's always available on p2p one month befor its release, so why wait?) If i really love, i buy it. I also download movies coz the price for a cinema ticket is really really too high ! 9 euros to see a movie, it's stealing ! When i go to see a movie at the cinema, it's in Original subtitled version coz it's hard to find over the net.

In France, the authorities take some people at random who download illegal files and they have a huge price to pay (the maximum is 30 000 euros i think). It can be a guy downloading 3 mp3 a year or a big hacker downloading 3 divx per day...

I still have dial up internet, yet I still download tracks - particularly when an artist i dont usually listen to releases a good track or if i've heard great reviews about a new particular artist, for example, MIA...

But then I'll only download a couple of tracks, never a whole album. I want to support artists who create music that I enjoy, particularly new artists. So if i do like what I hear, I'll always buy the album. Plus I work for a music store and get discount so I have no excuse!

I dont agree with not paying for music, films, games - they cost thousands and thousands of pounds to create and the people should get paid for their work, creativity and time. If I was loaded and not a pikey student then I wouldn't download at all - Its only because I'm broke that I'll download a few tracks here and there...

Interesting replies everyone, keep em' comming!

(I have been gone for two days celbrating midsummer here in Sweden.)

Anway, i'm a little bit suprised coz i didn't think piracy was such a big thing in other countries... What i've heard is that Southkorea is number 1 and Sweden number 2 in illegally downloaded movies and such.

I also want a bit freer view of copyright... Now people are taking copyright on human DNA and animals and such things wich totally pisses me off!

Sure artists need credit for their good work, but if you buy an album today you now that 90% of the money is going to the record company wich uses all their money to promote artists like britney spears... I'd rather see a world without big record companies, i think that more people could live on their music then.

Anyway, keep em' comming!

I dont download...i used to , when i was always broke and had a download program that actually worked. But now i have money , i , like whirly said , rather support the band i like than to download their music. Plus , i like the package , the whole thing with artwork and stuff , i love going to the record shop and spent a whole afternoon searching for good music...!!! Games , i dont play games. Movies , takes to long...i only download programs sometimes!
