Some people are saying that CDs / cassettes etc are on their way out and that everybody in future will be downloading music. I just hope Record companies will give people the choice. I can see why people download music, it is cheaper and in a way, less wasteful (no packaging). But I don't want to listen to all my music whilst staring at a computer screen, I don't trust my PC anyway, and to me going out and buying a cd is more interesting than sitting there waiting for the thing to download. I (like others on here) want the item you can hold in your hand.

I say give people the choice!

I love going record shopping my self, in fact it is one of my favorate things to do, but so expensive. It is very easy to go in and think "today i am only going to spend 20" and then find so many good records that you end up spending 40.

I only buy 1 CD.

When I went to USA I bought 3 CDs, and that was my maximum.

Fluke - Risotto

Goldie - Ring of Saturn

The Future Sound of London - Dead Cities

If you buy 10 CDs here, you end up having 0 money. ;)

when the CD came on the market in the early 80s, people said, that was to be the end of vinyl.

vinyl sales in germany increase from year to year by about 6 to 10 % - higher production costs for a vinyl, however, lower selling prices.

all other mediums' -CD, CD single, MD, cassette- sales went down, with more downloads being sold at the same time.

however, there will always be real formats, even if there is a digital download - or did the newspapers and magazines die out when a) the radio b) TV c) the Internet were developed and made being available to most people in big parts of the world?

i have about 2.700 records and CDs in my collection with only a handful of free legal downloads on my PC (most of those songs i have on vinyl or CD, as well) and i can't imagine it being the other way round.

i totally agree with equinoxe -you ain't a manic with your collection, if so, i am as well ;-) -; it is just cool to have limited editions, digipaks, coloured vinyls, gatefold sleeves, extras (like all constellation releases have), booklets, cover, a nice heavy vinyl (or a small CD )... that is something a download could never replace. plus: when losing your iPod, your whole "collection" is lost. i only can lose my whole one if there is fire or water damage.

i agree that CDs and even records are sold for high prices - it is some kind of luxury. i do not smoke and hardly drink alcohol; i spend money for records. and when going to a record store i won't leave it without a purchase (well, sometimes i do...). yesterday: bought 3 new records plus ordered another 8 on the internet. i even managed to buy 70 (!) in london within 3 hours.

however, a CD can be found for 10 quid when new and -after some time- for 7. vinyls won't go down in price that much but are -at least in germany- cheaper than CDs. the price to download a whole CD album is about the same; and you only have the tracks on your computer than. a CDR is very cheap nowadays, for sure and internet connection as well. however... some tracks on a CD-R can never replace a full album - and where do you want artists to sign on if you only have an iPod or a CDR? signed records are sooo cute

if people prefer downloads - okay. i do not and i am happy to have a collection in which i could lose myself for hours.

plus: a download is nothing special. but to find the first original rare pressing of an old vinyl... if you already did you know how it feels. and no, it doesn't have to cost you the living of a week.
love is all.

Collecting is really cool, and it's a lot of fun. Back when I used to collect stuff, it was always such an adventure - especially when I didn't have a car to get anywhere. My best girlfriend and I were into the same band, and we'd have her dad drive us to all these record shops and swap meets. Good thing he was a collector of Beatles stuff and was totally up for it. My brother was also game for taking me to music stores. It's such a great feeling to be in a shop somewhere and find that one thing you've been looking for, or find something you didn't even know existed.

It also opens up the memory floodgates when you go back through your collection after you've left it sitting for a long time.

I just don't have the time or money to be headlong into it like I once was. It was a lot easier being a collector when I was living at home with my parents and had money to burn!

My mom was pretty quiet about my collecting, she must've thought I was nuts but she felt it was a relatively safe hobby. I could've been out doing much worse things.

My dad on the other hand, he would get so pissed off! He'd say "Goddamn it! What are you doing blowing all your money on all that U2 crap?"

I still have a couple of very old boxes with most of my collectibles marked 'U2 Crap' on them. They say you have to honor your parents somehow! X-D

I have only about 100 items of Chemical Brothers stuff, but i don't colect any vinyls (i don't like that format, and i don't have a turntable). I have about 200 original albums. I'am just starting... ;-)

I would LOVE to see your collection some day, 'Eyes. It would be an amazing sight. Mine is only around 200-250 or so (all CDs, with a few vinyls sitting around), with around 20-25 Chemical Brothers items. I try for efficiency, tracking down the B-sides and remixes with as few purchases as possible (that's why I'm so excited for the US Boxer EP!).
