LP = Long Player, full album

EP = Extended Player, which makes it sound (to me) like it's longer than an LP, but I guess it's just from the fact that it's longer than a single, but not long enough to be called 'long'...

that's my take

Thanks all to clear at up for me! So EP's contain songs in the extended (longer) versions and some additional tracks that no appear originally on the albums. EP can stay like some sort of stand alone mini-album? :) The name LP remind me always the vinyl, i don't know why, but i think that name was used before compact discs :) Once again thanks.

yah, of course the names LP and EP and all that came before CDs...

and an EP doesn't have to have extended versions of tracks, it's just a longer record than a single, and shorter than an album

EP and LP comes from the good old vinyl record times, around 50ies. LPs were not really standard at these times, just classical, jazz and compilation stuff released on 12" but very little albums as we know them today.

the main format used to be the 7" single which usually featured 1 song on every side. some artists, however, decided to have 2 or -very rare- more songs on 1 side of a 7". those releases -which played longer than the other ones- quickly became known as "extended play" singles. they lost their importance when more and more albums were released. however, some artists went on releasing EPs. when CDs first were released EPs could have lost all importance as the maxi CD replaced them while less and less 7"es were released.

the 7" now has gained more importance again but EPs aren't released that often nowadays...
love is all.
