Games like D & D get a bad rap. My husband was a big time gamer and played all that stuff, D & D, Talisman, etc. etc.
These games can be a lot of fun but it's better when there's a group of people as these games aren't meant to be played by 2 people alone. There is this game, Chaos Marauders I think it's called... we played it a few years ago but instead of Mountain Dew we drank hard liquor and as the night wore on we threw out the rulebook and made it up as we went along. It was funny! The more the merrier. San booze, it's no more or less dangerous than any game you'd play on the Wii, PS3, Xbox or World of Warcraft. As long as it's not running your life and you're leaving the real world behind and you don't buy into the whole "D & D is satanic" bullshit - playing an old fashioned game can be a nice change from sitting on the couch and twiddling your fingers raw with a console game.
Our son is turning into a little gamer geek and we spend time playing these types of games with him. It's fun to see because his perspective is fresh and not marred by the stereotypes (not that there isn't a grain of truth to the whole living in your parents' basement thing) that come along with gamer geekdom. We have a couple of friends that come over and play, too - old friends of ours that used to game with stash back in the olden days. My son's teacher last year actually encouraged playing these types of games because the game play is complex and triggers critical thinking and strategy, and dealing with small game pieces helps with fine tuning the motor skills.
Now where's my Mountain Dew?
