many of you will probably not care enough to be surprized, but I listen to very little in the area of electronic music (*big gasp*). In fact, the only groups I have more than 1 record of are fatboy slim, air, and good ol' london dust explosion... Anyway, could you good folks give me your imput on essential electornic albums? Especially from people Massive Attack, Leftfield, Orbital, and others who play into chems dj sets or area of music. Thanks!

Leftfield: leftism & rhythm and stealh

Massive Attack: Blue lines & Mezzanine

Orbital: brown album & InSides (check AnType for more info)

Prodigy: Music for the Jilted Generation

Daft Punk: Homework

Underworld: Second toughest of the infants

The rest will have many more suggestions. These are certainly my favourite electronic music albums.

Joslyn, nice suggestions. The first essential I thought of when I saw this post was Massive Attack "Mezzanine", but you already mentioned it. Still though, I cannot recommend that record enough!

Here's some more:

Timo Maas - Music for the Maases (a great mix of all different kinds of great stuff)

Plump DJ's - Plump Nite Out (get it now)

Crystal Method - Vegas (better than Tweekend, imo though there's complaints that it sounds a bit dated but oh well)

Jack the Tab Tekno Acid Beat (pretty much by Psychic TV, real cool acid... speaking of which, I need this on cd rather than vinyl - it's been ages since I listened!)

The Orb - U.F.OFF (oooooo... little fluffy clouds, aw yeah)

Groove Armada - Vertigo (a fine first release that's nice and chill)

Underworld - Everything Everything (this is a cool listen once you've graduated from Second Toughest of the Infants)

And that should tide you over till the others get here!

FC/Kahuna - Machine Says Yes

I can't recommend this album highly enough!! truly this was the best album of 2002. FC/Kahuna have a very similar history to the chemical brothers. Back in the day of big beat the chems were playing a the 'heavenly social', the kahunas were playing their own london club 'big kahuna burger'. the 2 club shared many of the same dj's. unfortunately the kahunas were not that hot with the production skills. and done a fair few dodgy remixes. they closed there club down and spent the next 4 years learning how use there studio equipment , learning how to produce.

2002 they return with 'machine says yes' and the 4 years spent on it was well worth it. this album is in a similar vein as 'dig your own hole' a lot of raw energy in it. i think anyone who likes the chems will love this album.

Oh, Ride are brilliant! They never were that big in the States, then again, the Manchester/shoegaze hub never got a whole lot of massive attention with the exception of a few songs on the radio. It's nice to see a mention of them here and now, I thought they'd slipped into the "where are they now?" file amongst the general public. Going Blank Again is a well played record in my house.

All of a sudden I feel like I unearthed a time capsule!

I did enjoy My Bloody Valentine, Loveless is a really cool noisy record, great warped and psychdelic sounds. I didn't really get into them til about 97 though - way late in the game, though I did see Kevin Shields play with Primal Scream when they played in California (along with Mani from the Stone Roses - so it was like hitting 3 birds with one stone!) A good friend of mine saw MBV play way back when and he said it was the loudest show he'd ever gone to, ears ringing for 3 days afterward, and I believe it!

Chapterhouse is also pretty cool, but it was pretty much the same dealie as MBV. Blood Music is a great record and speaking of which, Global Communications' "Chapterhouse: Blood Music" is a fantastic record.

I like the Charlatans as well. I had an opportunity to see them during the Us and Us Only tour, and the did an instore at Virgin Megastore in Los Angeles... but it was a weeknight and I couldn't find a sitter so I had to pass it up. The Universal rep who came into Tower that I worked with felt so bad, she got a cd signed for me with all the guys' names. I did eventually see them at Coachella and they were soooooo good, really tight. Also Tim Burgess has this club up in Los Angeles called Bang where he dj's and one of these days I'll get there. From the look of the ads, it sounds like it's right up Manchester alley with the music they play along with synth pop, brit pop and 60's mod.

I think that you just have to get out there and do a little bit of exploring by yourself....I found out that this is the best way to really get into techno or electronic music....Just be open to new artists and tracks..

I got that today! Gave my car stereo a real work out and very good music, exact to what you said. Thanks all for your suggestions, I had some albums suggested such as Leftfield's Rhythm and Stealth, Kraftwerk's Trans-europe express, and Crystal Method's Vegas. I enjoy these albums and now MBV so this should be a indication of your good tastes in music

I need to put all these ideas on paper so when I hit the record stores I can have a shopping list
