I did a little research it looks like Ed lambasted the critical little twits on the forum.

So after many years and wishy washy waffling between which way and how I would like to pursue a different career path, I have finally reached a decision that I know I'd be comfortable and happy with in both the short and long term. And by the grace of some members of my family, I'm getting the tools and encouragement I need to keep myself on track and make things happen.

It feels pretty good. It's been over a decade since I've felt so comfortable and positive in my decision. For the past couple of years I've been entertaining the thought of pursuing a higher education or going to vocational school. I've tossed around the idea of being a court reporter or going to university to get a degree in art history. Weighing the pros and cons of each, evaluating the long term; Would I be happy? How much debt would I incur? Can I manage my current job, home life and school? Stuff like that. I love school but going back full time is daunting both time wise and financially. I am the primary bread winner and absolutely must continue working in the interim. My husband is going to school now and is currently unemployed. Anyway, I'm so glad I tossed those ideas because I've concluded I wouldn't be happy long term if I pursued court reporting, and let's face it - not a lot of employment options I'd want to pursue in the art history realm! :P So anyway, I like to write. A lot. It's such a no-brainer that's been staring me in the face all along. Even at my current job. And here on the forum, too. My brother who works in advertising suggested I look into copy writing and put my knack for writing to good use in the creative sector. So here I am. I just signed up for a school that will help me build a portfolio, and if classes aren't filled then I'll begin in late September. If not, I'll definitely be going to classes in the winter semester. I'm really excited, so I thought I'd share!

You're never too old to rave, and your never too old to go back to school. You will have endless opportunities writing.

I am almost finished doing a uni degree in IT. At my age it might be a bit crazy, but I love it. Then I might go out and get a real job :ugeek: ... nah, just kidding.

I assume you be taking night classes right?

I hated coming to school after work because I knew I was going to fall asleep as soon as I sat in my desk. I wouldn't get out of class till 10:30 pm and go back home to sleep for maybe 5 hours and then go to work the next day. The only time I actually caught up with my schoolwork was on the weekends.

Art History was once a part of my curriculum, which some of my art portfolio came from, (even though some of the classes + lectures got me bored) but I had to build my motivation to create some works whether it was medieval (OK), neo-impressionism (boring), or (I still remember) The Japanese art of the Edo period! I did alot of drawings and some paintings during this time but I still didn't know what art career I wanted to take. Art history took me 2 semesters!

About 2 years later, I put my portfolio of all this accumulated art from high school and college inside my parents garage. a couple of days later, they had a garage sale and accidently threw my entire art portfolio away! Still hate my parents to this day ( they said it was junk I was saving!)

Moral of the story.... hold on to your crap....I mean your masterpieces!
I'm ready to see your artistic side Whirls. You definitely got my encouragement!

Thanks for the encouragement guys - what would I do without you?? <3

inchem - I felt sick to my stomach when you said your parents accidentally threw away your portfolio! I would have been reduced to tears! I hope over time you've been able to build back up your portfolio. The good thing about portfolios is they are a never ending life work in progress. :)

I majored in fine art years ago, so the art history classes were a prerequisite. I really enjoyed it and wish I could have gotten into it more. As for actual artworks, I've held on to a lot of my early works and they are stowed away. I was a display artist for Tower Records for a long time, and although I couldn't physically hang on to every little piece I did, I took pictures of a lot of things I felt most proud of - I have some of those things scanned and on my facebook, and I kept the Chems wall board I made but it's currently in storage since I have no place to put it in my home.

Anyway, what I plan on doing is getting into the copy writing field of the advertising and marketing industries. Moving away from pictures and working primarily with words. My training would involve both art direction and copy writing at first to learn and comprehend how both concepts work together in the field, then I would follow the writing path more intensely as the courses progress.

I'm praying it's not too late and classes aren't filled for the fall semester because I want to get a start on this now. But if they are, I'll just pick it up in the winter.

I have a mate who makes a killing writing copy for websites. Websites require a totally different way of writing than printed media and there are not a lot of people who get that and are good at it. Plus the internet is still in it's infancy. Many opportunities there. Just thinking out loud...

Whirls--have you seen Mad Men?

This weekend is going to be epic. I'm moving, seeing The Twelves tonight, there's a party tomorrow night, and I'm meeting up with three new girls (thank you internetz).

The bad news? I woke up this morning with a fever and yakked. Uggh. Disgusting.

I'm on the mend, though, it seems. Gotta get my energy up for this evening!!!! Hope you all have a great weekend.

Keep on truckin' whirls. 8-)

Doing this seems like a good stepping stone for you too...

Updating my folio now of the freelance work I've just done, I went to Paris for a whilst for an internship at a design studio for as long as I could afford it, then ever since I came back, I dont know where I want to work and I'm paraonoid I'll burn out if a just go for anything for sake of more experience. Argh! The trials and tribulations of a self-centered self indulgent artist/designer. Gotta pay the bills though too...
Come out from the cold and into the setting sun. It's where it all began for me (not in Afrika), like it was out of control. Then after that life was sweet. So dream on into the pioneer skies of the fourteenth century and rise from the sunshine underground.

Ah, The Twelves, once again, rocked my world. They dropped Out of Control from a Mr. Oizo track (I think it was Hun) and it was EPIC! The club went OFF. Crowd cheered, hands went up, and I almost pooped myself. Oh yeah, and then they dropped Josh Wink's Higher State of Consciousness, adding in all sorts of nasty, meaty house beats and fills, tearing the FUCKING ROOF OFF. And then they blended Star Guitar into it. I think I fell in love with them a little bit.

The only bad part about Friday was that after meeting up with this girl and having drinks with her and my friend at a bar nearby before the show, we got into the club and there was a rather boring house DJ spinning some unexciting stuff, so much so that my date became bored and took off. :-( The good news is that she was only marginally cute.

I spent all day yesterday moving. Most of my body is sore. And I went from dancing my ass off Friday night until 2 a.m., not getting back to my apt. until 3 a.m., to getting up at 10 a.m. on Saturday to start moving, not getting done until 8 p.m., cleaning myself up and heading over to a party and drinking until 1 a.m., then getting up to take the moving truck back to the rental place by 8:15 a.m.

I'm so tired today, that I didn't even care that my coffee date canceled. She's now apparently pleading for a second chance. ::shakes head:: I'm too much of a nice guy.
