I didn't really care for 24 Hour Party People. I mean, I guess it was all right and there were good moments, but there were some things that bothered me about the film.
No mention (or extremely brief mentions) of other Manchester movers and shakers - Primals, Charlatans, Stone Roses, Inspiral Carpets. etc et al. At least Mani appeared in the movie but still. Sure, I know that the movie focused around the Factory and Hacienda and stuff, but to completely leave out other acts important in the whole movement just seemed a little short sighted to me. I didn't like the narration at all, I thought it was too cheeky that the guy would be off narrating then turn to the camera and start speaking as if he was talking to the audience - I can't pinpoint exactly why, but that really bugged me. And the time line moved at such a strange pace, you couldn't really tell what year the movie was trying to portray especially later during the film. And an itty bitty mention of the dj and rave movement that was prevailant at the Hacienda. Maybe there's a director's cut or something.
To be fair, it is a glimpse into what started the whole Manchester scene and delved into the people behind it - which for music history's sake is a good foundation for people who want to familiarize themselves with the whole movement.
But as far as movies go, I was a little let down. I wish I could get my hands on that BBC program that was aired not too long ago - sneaker brought it up some months ago, it was a documentary about the whole Manchester scene.

(Although, anyone claiming that Shaun Ryder is a genius should be shot and hung, not necessarily in that order. Maybe I'm being unfair on the guy, but that's my impression. Read a decent interview with Bez this week though, seems like a good bloke if nothing else.)

Those are perfectly fair critiques, Whirly. I enjoyed the movie a great deal, but it wasn't nearly what I expected from it. It had some great moments, such as the prostitute encounter and the chat with god. It also plodded in places. I liked the cheekiness of the film, which goes so far as to acknowledge that it doesn't necessarily represent the truth so much as a good story. An uneven, but overall enjoyable movie, in my opinion. The soundtrack kicks it up a notch....

You're just saying that because you're secretly in love with her, you sneaky bastard!

I think Being John Malkovich was the funniest movie I've ever seen.
hmmmm, what else... I watch so many movies it's hard to say... Resevoir Dogs is up on that list, so is Fight Club. City of the Lost Children, purely for visual style... Battle Royale, cuz giggling japanese school girls brutally murdering each other is just one of the funniest things ever... Brazil, the directors cut... Dogville, because I love Lars Von Trier, mainly because he's a satanist who hates everyone and actually thanked Satan for helping him make the miniseries Das Kingdom...
Oh yeah, Meet the Feebles, because (a) Pete Jackson made it (b) it's filmed completely with muppets, and © it's absolutely fucking mental.
the LotRs films it goes without saying, because someone adapted a book and did it well, and Sin City for the same reason... trainspotting, because it justified my aspirations to junky-hood.

The first 20 minutes were pretty good, but after that I fell asleep of boredom (although the part where John Malkovich enters his own head is quite funny). Very overrated movie IMHO.

oh yeah, 24 Hour Party People, the Stone Roses were 1000x more important to the manchester scene (and all music that followed) than the Happy Mondays could have ever been.
True dat, but I'm only saying so because I'm secretly in love with you, 'stash! :-// :D
Kurosawa's 'Throne of Blood' is a personal favourite. Samurai remake of Shakespeare's 'Macbeth'. Features one of the greatest death scenes in cinema history, IMO.
Trainspotting, Blue Velvet, Transformers: The Movie, all cinematic classics!

The first time we saw it, my sister had taken a quarter of this really insane afghani chronic, and she simmered it in oil for 8 hours straight, then used the oil to make brownies... I'd literally never been so stoned in my entire life. We were in the theater, and I kept laughing hysterically, and I was so high I didn't even know if I should have been laughing or not.
I watched it later, less high (I haven't watched a movie sober in over 5 years) and it was still on my favorite list.
Oh yeah, Harold & Kumar go to White Castle, my fave drug film ever.

Animated classic: AKIRA
dude, I love Akira. The first time I watched it was in japanese, no subs, no dubbing, and I thought, 'Wow, this is fucking awesome! I have no idea what's going on, but I love it' so I tracked down a dubbed version, watched it, and realized I understood it about as much as I had the japanese version.

Oh yes, I was nearly on the floor during the opening credits.
And the part where Malkovich went into his own head, I had tears streaming down my face and I was in a laugh coma - you know, when you laugh so hard your face freezes into a manic open mouthed smile and no sound comes out. I thought we were all going to get kicked from the theater.
Those were some gooooood brownies.
