Could someone tell me why artists/labels have to build the hype before the album is released? Why not spread the record in every shop and then start promoing? If you are already famous like the prodigy it's not like the shops wouldn't buy loads of records before the hype hits, right?
The labels are the ones who're behind the hype. The more hype they generate, the more money they will generate. They spend money into the thousands in promotions - everything from poster flats, regular posters (for use in stores or on end racks in stores) bin card placards for record shops, promos for instore play, even in some instances where the artist is positioned in the store (for example, like in a 'listening station') costs money. It's unbelievable how much money a label will spend in promoting an artist! Crazy... It's a lot of work from not only the artist, but people on the label's side all the way down to the retailer. What goes into promoting costs is what's passed down to us small people who buy the music.
Unfortunately, even though the Prodigy are one of the biggest names in electronic music, record shops generally stock items that cater to the store's demographic - who shops there and what kind of music those people are buying... for example, stores like the chain I work for pay roughly $9.99 cost for a cd. The retailers mark it up almost 100% in order to turn a profit. My store in particular does a steady business selling electronic music but it doesn't sell as much as say, rock pop and soul. It wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for my company to order and pay for hundreds of Prodigy cd's at $9.99 a pop on account of Prodigy's big name in dance music because it would wind up sitting and gathering dust (sadly, like what happened with the 300+ Chemical Brothers Singles cd's we received when it came out) in the back room until it's ready to be returned back to the vendors = lost money.
It is very sad how these things work out, and the internet leak is a shame... but Prodigy has been gone now for 7 years. That's a long long break in the music industry. Imagine if the Chems took a 7 year break, we'd all be freaking out!!! Prodigy really hit their peak in the US in 1997 with Fat of the Land when dance music as a whole was taking off. Music audiences are fickle and people have probably forgotten or shifted their focus to different bands/music. If the labels want to make money, and if Prodigy wants to make money, they need to work together to joggle the music listening audience's memory and create some kind of big, long-awaited-they're-finally-back hype.

I am a big prodigy fan and did dl the promo on saturday. before i talk about the ablum i'm just going to field some general comments made here.
it hasn't been leaked on P2P networks (atleast i don't think yet). as soon as the first promo CD was spotted and posted on a popular prodigy msg board the ripping and uploading of it soon followed. saturday afternoon it was being sharred via MSN and one 1 users server. By that night it was down on that one up on another (prodigy ru still has i think). WHat's being encouraged is that it stays away from P2P and it's given more or less to prod fans and those that will buy the album. I'm not sure if that will work out well as some tracks have found there way on Soul Seek.
why i dl it...
It is exciting pick up the CD on the first day at the shop and dropping it into your fave stereo. It's also exciting after 7 years of waiting and the press reviews building to get a copy of it yourself. Finding on an unexpected date, dl, burning it, reviewing it, sharring it, etc..... it's quite the experience. It will be nice to purchase the album but just as I have been waiting 25 days for my promo of the singles of Girls to arrive, it's nice to have something to listen to. I'm bit of an odd ball when it comes to the prodigy, if I wasn't a social/interactive fan of them I would wait it out. I managed to do that with the White Stripes Elephant as they had plenty of other things for me to think, talk, and listen to.
although complaints can be made about mp3 quality etc... XL and prodigy last week released Memphis Bells from the new album as a limited single as a mp3.
the album..... i'm a fan of it. Julliet Lewis sounds fantastic on hotride. the best review so far i have read is this one by pete thomas. http://groups.google...Google%2BSearch
I hope the Chemical Brothers work on some remixs for this album such as on the track Wake Up Call.

It's only a matter of time before it's found on ftp servers all across the board.
I can understand wanting to download a record because you are excited about it, or test driving before you buy - I did that with Come With Us, (not something I'm proud of, to be honest, and I promised myself I wouldn't do it again) so I can understand where you're coming from. I judged the record before its time - and I missed out on the initial thrill of hearing it for the first time while I was still on a rush of buying the record(on my birthday, no less!), unwrapping it, popping it in my car stereo, and tearing out of the record store parking lot. ;)
I guess that's my way, I like the experience of the whole record-buying thing, then again I'm old fashioned and perhaps a bit biased in that regard. To me there's not much thrill when you download a long awaited and highly anticipated record of your favorite band off the net. But anyway I hope I'm not offending anyone here who does things differently.
Who knows, maybe the leak is part of the hype? I wouldn't be surprised...

The new Prodigy album is already on suprnova.org... It's bit torrent, but I would hardly call that keeping it just to Prodigy fans.

R'n'B newcomer Jentina is the girlfriend of Prodigy frontman Keith Flint, it has been revealed.
According to the tabloids the couple have been dating for only a few months, while other sources claim they have been together for more than a year.
According to an insider: "Keith and Jentina are totally smitten with each other."
"They share the same sense of humour and get on brilliantly. There is an age gap, he's 34 and Jentina is only 19, but that doesn't put them off.
"Jentina is a massive talent and didn't want to be famous just as the girlfriend of someone so well known. Keith likes leading a private life. Because he hates attention it suited him to keep quiet too."
Romany gypsy Jentina, one of thirteen children, was raised in Woking, Surrey before moving to Miami where she first began making music.
Her much-hyped debut single "Bad Ass Strippa" entered the charts at 22 last week and has slipped down to 39.

Fuck AONO, I'm dying to hear whatever Portishead's got up their sleeves! They've also not had a new album since 1997 and Portishead has not announced details/release dates yet, just that they're in the studio :(
funny you mention that, i was just poking around there page yesterday to see what was new. it's not updated and the videos were down =/
i thought massive attack also had a follow up to 100th window to come out last year. hymmmm.

i've downloaded it and will be buying the cd
there will be poeple who download it and don't buy but a great proportion of these would never have bought the cd anyway
i notice through my friends and chatting to people that those who have an interest in music still buy cd's and probably buy more because they can download stuff and try it out rather than taking a risk
the worst people who download and never buy cd's are those who think a decent dj mix comes from KISS or MOS and will buy NOW56 rather than artist albums. sure they're effecting the proft of the record companies but who gives a $$$$ they've been overcharging for their services for decades
if anyone want to find the download a simple google search should suffice
cheers

for those of us with each new chemical brothers album who miss the dirty funk of exit planet dust and dig your own hole the prodigy album certainly doens't leave you with that feeling.
hint, add "torrent" to your google search and you should have a lot more luck.

You should have checked it out because there were some other than official release mixes on that site and NOT only in mp3
