By new stuff I was refering to stuff like Drukqs, Windowlicker etc. His ambient works are im sure just considered ambient.

Aphex Twin is all over the musical map. A lot of places I've seen have simply put him in an "experimental" category. But that's broad too! I also tend to think that IDM is the new term for "experimental" but maybe I'm wrong.

Genres are a good thing in moderation - they can be a good tool when classifying music and have helped me out a bunch. But the more genres/sub genres sprout up, the more likely things will be categorized into oblivion.

^ Yes, I *know* that, it's why I said what I did. It's a perfect example of music being categorized into genre oblivion rather than keeping things simple and letting the music speak for itself and perhaps blowing the lid off of neat genre boxes. It's as crazy as the chopping up and stacking of heavy metal into tidy little stacks: dark metal, nu-metal, black metal, speed metal, thrash metal, doom metal, power metal, goth metal and so on and on and on... it's enough to make a person go mental!! By the time you've said your piece about any of these genres... *sigh* I'm sorry, I'm just ranting because this kind of stuff really gets to me and I sometimes wish things were a bit simpler, you know? To me Aphex Twin is still all over the musical map no matter which way you slice it - drill and bass, ambient, idm, experimental, whatever - all over the place. I really don't think he *can* be categorized. :?

Genres are good though. I mean, take 'dance' as a genre. The Chems fit into this, but so do crap acts like Scooter. Hence why sub-genres are good.

Also, I like nu-skool breaks, but hate drum 'n' bass, so it's nice is I'm told about these things, so I don't waste time listening to music I know I'm gonna hate.
