the only thing to do if you buy items from ebay or any internet store ask specific questions about the record you want to buy. All the Kylie yellows on ebay have the wrong picture but if you ask about it they all tell you it's the see-through.

For EBW 5 we should ask about the length of the track. I would like to ask if anyone has EBW 5 for a while now to tell us the right tracktime so we can check it.

Thanks alot guys and girls. And Tom & Ed, please release EBW 5 as a b-side!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????

if you bet a bootleg on ebay, tell the seller and send it back. If they refuse report it to ebay. Simple as that.

p.s. Collecting has always been frustrating. Making sure it's the REAL thing (aka eil putting up that MMM saying it was the first press with the removed track). Or simply waiting for the right thing to surface (aka Confront Your demons, In Glint, Anti-Nazi Mix, Paris Sets.

"aka" means "also known as", to my understanding.
He put on a turn-down collar, a black bow, and wore his Sunday tail-coat. As such, he looked spruce, and what his clothes would not do, his instinct for making the most of his good looks would.

AnType, you're absolutly right. EBW's bootlegged, Kylie's "Slow" bootlegged, MSP "Done & dusted" bootlegged and also cd's, Confront your demons cd-r, DJ-set in Paris cd-r. Collecting has become hell!!! We all discussed the promo DJ-sets before but is vinyl is also heavely bootlegged it becomes impossible to get a genuine item. I think all this is because of ebay and other auction sites. More clearly, wrong people who see what's hot, buy it for alot of money and then copie and bootleg it. For artists promo's are a real good way to test their new material but I think record companies should do much more to protect their product and there by themselves and their costumers being all of us. The Chems/Virgin already started it by copie controlling the cd promo's and give the record promo's real sleeves, not just a simple bleack or white sleeve. Hopefully we will all be helped by official releases of promo's in the future.

There's a Virgin Megastore Online, but it's like an Amazon affiliate - virginmega.com

This bootlegging for profit is totally out of line, its dishonesty really pisses me off. I don't know how this can be stopped, unless there's a decrease in demand.

Well, one thing the labels could do is watermark the sleeves of these promos, or in vinyl's case, watermark the label that's on the disc... somehow. A diehard collector would know what to look for in order to spot an original or a fake. I don't know how costly this would be, but it works for currency and it might work in this medium too - then again, maybe doing something like this is not at all possible or even worth it considering promos are not for sale or distribution, that's why they are promotional items...even though there are record stores that buy and sell them regularly. Nevermind e-bay - there's always going to be a risk when you buy from a private party. Buyer beware no matter what you're bidding on.

Yes collecting is hell you're all correct.

But if collecting was easy it wasn't that much fun.

If I could go into one shop and buy there everything that I want in my collection.

Than I wouldn't have so much fun tracking all those beautiful real CD's and vinyls.

But I know what you're all talking about.

Probably I bought the bootleg versions of EBW 5 and EBW 6.

And yes I hated that when I found this out. (Curses in Dutch!!!)

Somebody mentioned EIL.com

That site sucks big time.

Sometime ago somebody on this forum wrote:

He bought the Dust-up-beats (first version) (EIL told him) for a lot of hard earned cash.

But when he got the record it wasn't the first one but the later released version.

Bootleggers and sites like EIL are people who would kill there grandmother for some money.

I say kill the bastards or at least cut there ears off so that they can't hear music ever again.

I rest my case!!!

Apart from a couple of Japanese cds I bought from eil just before Christmas (which only came through the post a week ago) I haven't bought any Chems cds, vinyls or anything. I think I just got bored :-|.

I was at Amoeba music in Los Angeles last night and today - yes I had to go back today because I got there too late last night and only had 10 minutes to browse. That place along with the others in N. California are just incredible, packed with happy crate diggers looking for a gem they might not find anywhere else. So anywho I was talking about e-bay to one of the cashiers behind the counter, and we got to chatting about e-bay rip offs like some of you experienced. Apparently, these bootlegged promos of shit quality and mass quantities are really becoming widespread, not just with the Chems. It's sad, e-bay just ain't what it used to be. It's not fair that buyers are second-guessing what they've purchased.

On a side note, I added to my Chem collection today. (Now I feel like I can take part somewhat in the collection discussion...) Picked up Spiritualized "I Think I'm In Love" single with the Chemical extras: $6.95. Picked up Charlatans v. Chemicals: $6.95. $2.95 for my Loops of Fury replacement. Among other goodies... Cd's of course, and these items were used but in perfect condition. 2 of these have been hard for me to find in my area and ordering them would've been quite a task, especially the Spiritualized one. Not to mention the prices I would've paid. Even with my discount at work, I wouldn't have gotten away with only paying $2.95 for Loops of Fury. I couldn't believe how cheap this stuff was. Yay me, miracles do happen! :D

That's the way to do it! That Spiritualized remix is super!!! How about we all board a plane and go with you to that record store.

P.S. Can we sleep over at your place?? ;-)

Yes it is! :) I've been wanting the Spiritualized single for ages but since it's out of print it's been hard to find - no luck in the past. It was an essential that I felt I needed. I seriously did a happy dance right there in the store when I found it!

Actually I thought I died and went to heaven when I was in Amoeba music. I've been to the other 2 Amoeba music stores up in Northern California a few years ago and I thought "why can't we have this store in southern California?" Then the new one opened in Los Angeles a while ago and it's taken me ages to finally convince my husband I wouldn't clear out the bank account if I could please, pretty please, just *check* out Amoeba. Plus he couldn't understand why me, a Tower Records employee, would want to spend her day off in a record store. All of you guys would love that place, there is sooooooooo much stuff in there - I was in there 2 hours (could've stayed longer but thought better of it) and I didn't even rummage through the half of it.

So yeah, come out for a visit, party at my place: with moderate traffic, Amoeba is about an hour and 15 minutes from where I am and well worth the trip.
