Every day when I just zap into any music channel I'm being bombarded with average, borring commercial shit, the so called music INDUSTRY, and that's what you never, if you're honest, can compare with the chems. [/i]

Thank you. That is an excellent point. I am inundated with shit day in and day out - always pimping out new releases that for the most part are mediocre at best. To me there is no comparison to the Chems, because there is simply no other kind of music out there. Even if you only want to listen to Dig Your Own Hole, you will not find another record like it anywhere in *any* genre. But for me that holds true with all their records because their own style is unique and consistent, yet there's so much variation in that style and consistency... You can't box them in. Take all their records and stack them up against any other band/artist and you might be able to draw some similarities, but I believe the Chems are in a league of their own. There is no other kind of music out there.

I almost wish there were other bands like them, but then I would become a music gluton.

I want to get fat on chemical brothers!

First off, I'd like to note that 'Galvanize,' 'Left Right,' and 'Get Yourself High,' are most definitely not gangster rap. 'Galvanize' and 'Get Yourself High' are electronic hip-hop explorations at the front lines of innovation. 'Left Right,' on the other hand, takes modern hip-hop, adds some electronic components, and bears heavy old school hip-hop and funk influences, all with some excellent metaphorical lyrics (even though many seem to believe they are the brothers' least metaphorical -- just dig a little deeper!). These tracks are indicative of a greater confidence in Tom and Ed, as they've surely wanted to do hip-hop from the beginning, but weren't certain how to approach it. They ought to be proud.

Thank You! This is the point I was aiming to make but you put it in perfect words. I 100% agree with you.

@whirlygirl

I'm glad to see there's someone out there who's sharing some of my opinions.

Every time i want to take up the cudgels for the brothers i feel like a missionary, and i don't want to, because it's nice and necessary to have so many tastes and opinions which differ otherwise all would listen to the same and no variety were give... and so we need the plenty of diversity (styles, cultures, opinions, traditions, music, food, etc....)

But i can't hold when there's shit (concerning my personal views) spoken about them . . .

The Chems have always been influenced by hip-hop; almost every bio of the band I've ever read states their love of Public Enemy (and juxtaposes it with their love of MBV). EPD is very 80's hip-hop influenced, just check the drum break in 'Leave Home' for the most obvious example. 'Not Another Drugstore' is a fantastic track and one of my fave Chems B-sides.

Personally, I'd like to see the Chems take some time out and start more producing for other artists as opposed to have collaborators join Chems records. (I really like New Order's "Here to Stay".) I would love to see them do for some indie-rock band what Weatherall did for Primal Scream fifteen years ago.

Or a track on the next K-Os record, or work with a young, hungry, ready to break it big rapper in the US. If hip-hop/rap is the big commercial genre, what better subversion than to infuse it with some psychedelic breakbeats? The Chems aren't just capable of topping the charts, with the right production collaboration they're capable of helping mainstream hip-hop regain underground cred and critical acclaim.

Csar, I totally get what you mean about Chemical Brothers missionary work!! X-D Sometimes I feel I'm too evangelical, but for the most part the enthusiasm here on this forum inspires that side of me. So I have nobody to blame but you guys! Just kidding of course. ;)

I think the Chemicals are well on their way to producing for more artists. I get the feeling that they are interested in this aspect of their career and their production work with the Charlatans, Beth Orton, New Order, etc. are laying the groundwork for future production that might involve whole albums. But we'll hear it when we hear it. Maybe right now they are honing in on their skills one song at a time before taking the plunge with another band's entire record.

Personally, I would rather the Chems make their own music. Producing a record takes so much time. A producer becomes the extra member of the band. I would also think the commitment of producing an entire album would take away from the Chems creating their own material and from what I've read recently, they are still very much into making their own music.

Not saying I'd be against the Chems producing other bands. I think they'd be awesome! But in time, like everything else. If anything it would be interesting to hear what direction they could steer a band in. Right now with Chemical collabs, they can sort of adapt and mold their sound to compliment an artist - a good example would be Out Of Control which has a heavy New Order feel. Same with the Test, vocals aside, sounding very Verve-like. Because of this ability to adapt (and I think they can adapt because they are inspired, like with the Magic Numbers), this makes the Chems a great collaboration band imo. Seeing as how their collabs affect their music and showcase their production abilities, I wouldn't want to see this stop...

That'll never happen as long as the bastard stepchild known as Crunk is allowed to shaked it's redheaded dreadlocked self within the pop mainstream and skeet on any emcee who doesn't talk about a new platinum chain or Bentley windshield wiper blade put on layaway whilst not trying to hock a clothing line or energy drink.

Agreed, but Atlanta will only rule the airwaves for a short while before somewhere else claims the crown. Hopefully Dr. Dre will get his shit together and release his album sometime before 2008. (Now that would be an interesting collab: Dre w/Chems...... Dre did do a little work with NIN on The Fragile, so stranger things have happened...)

'Get Yourself High' was a step in the right direction and K-Os was an inspired choice as a thinking-man's MC who actually has underground cred (and mainstream appeal, at least in Canada), but it received no promotion over here whatsoever. If Astralwerks/Virgin/EMI/whoever actually pushed a Chems-produced hip-hop track or album in North America, they might make some headway. And a non-crappy video (see: Galvanize for an example of a video that will never get any videoplay) wouldn't hurt either.
