you must have heard some rather lame DJ(s) then Chemd. I have heard Terry Hooligan (of the Atomic Hooligans) scratch the living shit out of a pair of CDJ1000's. I have heard quite a few other DJs go off with them as well. thank gawd, there are lots of DJs with lots of tallent looking towards the future. limiting one's self to vinyl is just plain being stupid..

I agree with chemd on this one. From vinyl we got scratching, warped records that gives you a natural sinusuidal pitch shift and a million ways to play with music. From tapes we got flanging, tape echo, pitch warble. With digital recorded music you get straight back what is recorded. You have nothing to play around with and you can't naturally modify the sound.

Don't get me wrong, CD's are great. They are nice, convenient, and portable and have great fidelity, but they are more like the automatic transmission of the musical world. If you really want to have control over the medium your playing, you have to go to something more manipulitable and technical. Vinyl is more like the manual transmision of the music world.

No matter how close you replicate an effect or sound (analog sythn emulation by digital syths, CD "turntables"), it can never truely replicate what it is trying to emulate.

how are 101010101010101010101010's being scratched a comparisin to the grooves on a record being scratched? there is no comparisin. a record has "the sound" on it, a cd has a replicant of the sound on it. they are good when you just wanna listen to tunes, but not to make music with

you lot really don't know what your on about. i have 2x technics 1210 and 2x cdj 1000 and i have just ordered a cdj800 this week. i bet none of you have even played on a vinyl emulating cd turntable.

sound quality

the only negative side with cd players is the sound is not as warm as vinyl. but on a good sound system this sound difference should be nothing. the natural reverb on the system should cover this up.

vinyl you get crackles and pops, now we can get sentamental about this but the plain truth is that when the music was produced those sounds were not part of the production. and how many times have i been in a club and the needle gets knocked accidently. or the record skips, or dirt builds up and muffles the sound.

scratching

as for scratching the cdj 1000 is a dream, no skiping. you get a perfect representation of what you are performing on the platter. IT IS JUST LIKE VINYL!!

remixing live

when you play vinyl. the record goes from start to finish end of story. the cdj has many unique features that you could never do on vinyl. 'looping' is a great feature. and if you got effects units you can play a repeated bar or whatever length and mash up the sound. play an accapella and change loop length and really fuck up the vocal, to really devestating effect. 'hot cues' are another great inovation you can jump to a pre-programed position in a track at a touch of a button. keep hitting the button and your making a stuttering effect. these tools give you a very simple way of remixing live!!!

cd is the future

Many top name house dj's are playing more cd's than vinyl, FACT. Erick Morillo head of subliminal records has the biggest night i ibiza, 'subliminal sessions'. he has totally ditched vinyl for cd thanks to the cd turntable revolution. when i saw him earlier this summer he was using 3 of the buggers and not a single bit of vinyl. Roger Sanchez (my favorite dj

) plays 70% cd's in his set, he is sponsered by pioneer and is spearheading this revolution. even house purists Masters At Work are using more cds than vinyl.

why are they all moving to cd??? cos the cd format is far more flexible than vinyl. it is adding a new dimension to mixing records.

now we can all get sad about the demise of vinyl. but i like many other people are looking to the future. not looking at traditional methods of the past. much like the chemical brothers

i dont hear anyone saying 'you shouldn't use a drum machine cos it all zeros and ones'

if you visit my web site have a listen to my revolution 1000 mix. this was recorded on 2 cdj, and only one bit of vinyl. i know this is a good mix i done, but it would have not been as exciting if i'd played it on boring old vinyl. period

I have seen DJs burn up the dancefloor with a pair of CDJs. There wasnt anyone standing around bitching out cds vs vinyl. Just people dancing their asses off..

shut up and dance..

yeah, but it was all 0101010101 b4 it was pressed into vinyl...

...I know that vinyl sounds killer, but the way music is recorded these days cd/dvd is where the "sound" can be found. We can get way into bit processing if ya want to ;-)

Ohhhhh sweetness!!!! I wanted to get a nice pair of what I have coined "disktables"(feel free to use the term, it has real potential). I really have the notion that the control over the sounds is much more, far more then vinyl. That's essetially what we must seek!!! To control the sound. Those look badass that's for sure. Sign me up!!! I want 2!!!I gotta get a job.TO THE CLASSIFIEDS!!!!
