Brixton Reviews!

all the reviews have been done really so i will just add my little bit, my 2$.
- weren't inpresed with the crowd, seemed to be push the button chavs (those who have only heard one or two push the button songs, galvanise. saw them live on tv then given the opportunity to go watch them) who were at the front of the stage. no one seemed to be dancing and was too crowded to properly dance because of it- did try though
- cagedbaby i thought were quite cool and brought the cd at the end of the night to give them a chance. the cd isn't anything special but weren't that bad. (lali puna have been my favourite support band so far as i missed the secret machines when they played, turned up just after they had finished)
-the atmosphere wasn't as good as the prodigy gig last week but still enjoyable.
- didn't find the dj that special although i did dance till the very end at the front with all the old people who kept out of the way whilst the chemical brothers were playing!!!
- the music was briliant. some parts seemed a bit strange, but supergrass strange like playing out the original 'tomorrow never knows' intro. the songs on the push the button tour seem to be shorter than when i saw them at wolverhampton 2004 but some new interesting material and revivals.
-felt strange to not here TPPR at the end but have always wanted to hear the sunshine underground so they had answered my callings. the version they played of TSU was phenominal especially the ending.
-the 8 bars of heavy bass in surface to air feel great
-was my first ever gig in which i got cigerette burnt and to mark the occasion i got burned 4 times so thanks for that who ever you were.
-up at 6am friday, worked 7-2:30pm then got a direct train (with network rail) to euston (virgin actually but there you go). Did the gig then took 2 hours to get back to euston through the night buses. got the 5:58am to birmingham then to Tamworth for 8:30am. worked from 9-5pm then got to bed about for about 6:30 pm. up for 5am sunday then worked a 6-2pm shift.
-all in all i was quite impresed with the gig, still think i had the best attire.
- brixton is still the only place i know where you can get 'powder' or 'weed' at mcdonalds

X-D There's a Subway outlet here like that: "I'll have a six inch Pizza sub on parmesan oregano and a baggie of meth on the side, please."

that made me laugh
oh yer that's another thing that pissed me off, all those twats going round asking if you've got pills or want to buy pills then coming back 5 minutes later asking the same fucking person, that really got on my nerves.
and whilst were on the subject why doesn't brixton have a subway }:-@

Well, theres been so much review action here, and jeanies was sooo monstrous it kind of feels superfluous now haha, but ill give a rundown of my impression of the gigs, and weekend in general:
My devon mates turned up thurs night in Worthing, and after my ?lost ticket? fiasco it turns out id given my mate amy the money when I was visitin in the summer and she?d bought my my ticket :-// doh!! Hahaha still at least I didn?t have to shell out for another one.
Headed up to London fairly early on fri to hook up with jeanie. After muchos delays and missioning about I picked up our tickets from geoff at oxfod circus, who did the pair at 60, less than he paid, just to get rid of them ? good lad (thanks geoff! If your reading, was much appreciated man)
After a bit of a mix up with ?paddington? and ?farringdon? met jeanie at sloane square, tbh I was a bit nervous having never met her before, but that disappeared in about 10 seconds, she is so relaxed and easy going and as she says everything was cool and we got on really, really well. After a few drinks at the apartment (where after telling everyone to be really carefull I promptly accidently smashed a crystal glass whilst getting another one out the cupboard ? oops!) we went to the goose (I recommend this pub btw ? u do have ti que for ages, but they do a double vodka and mixer for like 2 ? bargain in london!!) ? I?d done some stuff on the chems forum cd with chemfan before, so I had already met him but it was the first time i met acidchildren there ? they are both top lads, really really nice blokes, proper into their tunes and the chems.
Hooked up with some of my other mates in there, and somehow ended up getting another ticket in the confusion of ticket melee hahaha ? all got sorted out in the end though, so everyone got a ticket and we headed to the gig.
Because of drinking time we got their fairly late, missed caged baby and after some cunning wheeler and dealering of standing/seating stubs we got all of us into the standing and adopted the position. It was fuckin cool, had forum mates on the right hand side in front of the speaker and my other mates a little way back, it was like a family gathering or something :D
I was well excited at this point, the crowd was buzzing, people were flashing grins everywhere and we were just waiting for the bomb to go off hehehehe
In comes tomorrow never knows, and the whole place applauded, you could feel everyone getting ready to go (mental I mean, not literally, that would be silly), you could feel that twitchy prickly anticipation coming on.
'intro' I thought this was wicked, more a snaphot of sound, very big sounding synths, with heavy euphoric chords, quite dramatic ? the crazy tron-esque grid-tunnel visuals and stuff were wicked!!
'hey boy hey girl' I liked the way this kind of slunk in instead of it being a really obvious kind of build drop thing, it was more subtle this time, and make the main ?here we go!? drop that much harder. Really well worked, with some excellent new squealchy reonant bits over the top
'morning lemon' short but sweet, plenty of funk to drift us into?
'get yourself high' amazing tune live, proper bass heavy tackle, u could feel the speakers being worked to the max hehehehe and the bit where it goes all 4/4 is just insane
'the big jump' see, on record I thought this tune was pretty cool, but not one of my faves, I thought the vocal was a bit shit, which is rare for the chems as they usually have the best vox snippets. But live this track toally does it for me, well I mean if u heard live 05 u can hgear the difference the synths are just made totally crazy, and it?s a really really intense part of the gig. Wicked.
'galvanize' this is just an anthem, the whole of the crowd had their fists in the air for this. the strings sound amazing on a big system
'block rockin beats' everyone went bananas, still a classic, spunds just as good, and the reverse breakdown drummy bit still gets me every time hehehe
'three little birdies down beats' a pleasant surprise, very squelchy and heavy
'come with us' the drum rolls through this and the cheeky vocal snippets were wicked. I really enjoyed the way this part of the set was a bit of a collage, a bit like the three birdies section on exit planet dust
'music response' bleepy, heavy, funky, great. At the end went into the bell section from the end of ?come inside?
'under the influence/it doesn't matter' this was cool, but I wish they went into the bassline from ?it doesn?t matter? rather than just mixing the vocal over the top. Still a highlight tthough
'out of control' on fri this was shortened, but as we all know for now this is for a reason :P
'tempetation/star guitar' yeh very very cool, crowd had their arms in the air, singing along.
'surface to air' I never used to get this song. I mean I didn?t dislike it, but I kind of thought it was a bit cheesy in a way. Now, on the other hand, I get it. Totally.
'the animal song' - this is sounding good, like i said in the other thread, kind of dubby, percussive, rolling, psychedelic and phat
'believe' hahaha this tune is ridiculous live, when they let it go it just rips like a mofo. I missioned over to jeanie at this point and asked if she was glad she came now, she just looked at m,e and went ?what sort question s that!!??? then continued pumping her arms in the air hehe
'ebw 7' tearing acid through a big system ? just the way I like it :P
'the golden path' uplifting and emotional, love the live version of this tune, always a winner.
'elektrobank' I really dig the end bit of electrobank, shame it went into just the beats, the bass on that system sounds well heavy
'chemical beats' always fun hahahahaha
fri
'out of control' well, u all know Bernard turned up. I would just like to add that his running on the spot dancing style was fucking ace, his Gibson sg was pukka and tom kept grinning over his mpc at barney ? quality quality moment.
'hold tight london' I love the album version of this, and the live version def does it justice ? its really deep and uplifting but in a melancholy sort of way, and whilst played along with the London visuals made me very proud to be in brixton. They didn?t play it last time I saw them as they did close your eyes with the magic numbers instead, so im not complaining, but it was great tohear out.
'the sunshine underground' first time ive seen the chems were they DIDN?T end with the reel. And it was cool, I really love this tune, I had a bit of a moment on the intro build up, everyone was clapping along, chemfan, acid and jeanie were down the front, arms in the air, and all my other mates were grinning away, it was really really cool :D whirly description sums it up, when the tune drops its just monstrous, with the tinkly bells and the rushy drums. Good shit
Sat (tbh, the main part of the fri and sat set were very similar, out of control was a bit longer, as were some of the little beaty bits between tunes. Saw caged baby this time, they were a bit too Nathan barley for my liking, I dunno they had some ok?ish tunes I suppose. I didn?t hate them, but I didn?t love them either. Coolest thing was getting to meet sneaks before the gig, we had a good chat, I really wanted to meet him and I wasn?t disappointed, hes a top lad. Next time sneaks, fabric for u my friend ;) the main difference between fri and sat was the crowd, they just weren?t as in to it as on fri, there was a lot more cheering and hand in the air action through the whole crowd on fri. and like I said in the other thread there were some right knobbers down the front, proper attitude, one bloked moshed into me then just glared like fuck at me!! I mean im a placid chap, so this was weird as man, I just sort of stared at him ,he shook his head, then carried on! What a pleb!)
Got glint ? I said the night before that I missed got glint in the set, I love the way they change the end with the massive synth chord thingy?s, and the mad end where it builds into a whopping crescendo. Class
Hold tight London ? see above hehe, same counts again
The reel ? always cool. They put some new spoingy nosies in as well on the drops, where do they get them al from? Do they have a back catalogue of weird squiggles? I bet they do :P
On the sat after jeanie came back from the barrier, it was the first time id seen her lost for words all weekend!! She had the glint man. Hehe!
So yeh fuckin hell, an amazing couple of gigs. Tom, ed, thank you so so much!!! I think I can safely say we all totally appreciate the effort you put in to your gigs, and yeh, well thanks a lot :D
jeanies already mentioned the other clubbing events, so I wont go into too much detail, but I will leave u with some choice quotes of the weekend:
jeanie: its because u look like a hobo (on me being given some free soup at prt-a-manger)
me, chemfan, jeanie, acidchildren and my mate Rupert after not getting in to fabric ?erm, shall we walk or cab? Where shall we go? whats on? shall we getthe map out?'? repeat for 1.5 hours X-D
acidchildren: 4.30am ?im getting a bit knackered
4.44am ? acidchildren is on a podium at the end throwing big shapes
Random geezer from chile in the end (about 35, dressed in black string vest, studded dog collar and big ass ketamine shades) to jeanie: ?look, I already have your phone number in my phone, it is called angel. Can I have your number??
Chemicalfan, on the way back from the end as we scurried around, lost, looking for a tube station: ?is this a good idea, trusting the only non-english person to lead the way??
Me, looking at sunrise: that looks like a bit of Madeira cake. Look at the layers!!
Whirly, after explaining that I couldn?t sleep because I had 3 lines going across my eyes in multidirections and I was poss gonna puke any minute: ?mippio. What have u been taking??
Sneaks ?i fuckin hate computers? ? the perils of ableton hahaha
Me: ?what are u wearing?? to our taxi driver taking us to fabric after he explained he has 700 mins free on his phone.. from this we deduced he was running phone line sex. Don?t ask me how. It was very late.
jeanie 2.00am ? yeh I think I might get a later flight tomorrow
2.01am ? yeh if I can get internet ill get a later flight
2.02am yeh fuck it, im def getting a later flight
4.00am yeh we might have to leave so I can catch my flight
4.01am yeh I think im def gonna get the early flight
6.00am right lets leave, im gonna get the early flight
6.30am (in the cab) fuck it,im gonna get a later flight
(that was so funny, the thought of getting to liverpool street was just tooo much for the jeanie at that hour X-D)
me: ?u could bite his nose off, spit in in a glass then drink the contents through a straw??
jeanie ?not quite what I was thinking, but yeh ok? ? how to deal with annoying blokes, Hannibal lector stylee
me: ?do u want some beggs and acorn? ? a weekends worth of raving catches up with mips
unfortunately, I only got one photo of the whole weekend because my camera is too dang bulky to take out, but it?s a cool one, me and jeanie with the chemical afterglow on Sunday afternoon 8)
basically, had a super spanking disco great weekend, a proper adventure, really top notch to meet everyone I did, and a truly memorable time. Bring on the NYE!! :D

Awwww fuck, mippio!
Great review, reading it was like I was there witnessing everything from the gig, Jeanie's Chemical Afterglint, pubbing with chemicalfan and Acidchildren, witnessing a beautiful girl turning down a desperate man (that's good entertainment!) and the overall rush of feeling from a killer and exhausting weekend - exhausting enough to make me think you were on something when I spoke to you. Or at least coming down off of it! ;)
Perfect - thanks so much for writing this review.

Or at least coming down off of it! ;)
