as long as the lead vocalist is there, a band is always the same band, as far as I'm concerned.... except for Genesis without peter gabriel
That's not true... Led Zepellin couldn't be Led Zepellin anymore when John Bonham died...
I said as far as I'm concerned.... I've never listened to Led Zepellin.
To me, the rest of the band is just their to provide something for the lead singer to put his lyrics to. The music is almost always secondary to the lyrics.
Except of course for a very small select number of musicians, Tom and Ed and Fatboy being the only ones I can think of right now.
I know what you mean, but really, I think Led Zepellin would never had been so great without the best drummer of all time, and one of the best guitarist of all time.
I think there's another rule : a band will always be the same band if its bassist leaves

A band is a unit, the sum of it's parts. For some bands it's OK to change members, the show must go on and if it works then good for them. But for some bands, it's just weird. I mean, Van Halen. You don't have to be a fan to know it's was just fucking weird to have had Sammy Hagar replace David Lee Roth.
The Beatles would never be the Beatles without John Lennon. U2 wouldn't be U2 without The Edge. And the Chems wouldn't be the Chems if it were only one of them.
Anyway. I will reserve judgment about this Kasbian matter until I can hear it for myself.

It's really hard for me to do, but I have to put their first album out of my mind because it blew me away on first listen - so my expectations for Empire are really high. To be fair the sophomoric effort is always subject to harsh criticism, especially after such a strong debut. But the 2nd album efforts being criticised goes for just about any band I think.

I don't know yet, guys... I think I may have to give Empire a more intent listen. I really do not like the song Empire. It seems to be going off in several different directions. Right when the groove settles in, the song switches gears, then shifts back into the groove, then peeters off someplace else. Maybe it'll grow on me.
The second song, Shoot The Runner is a little better, but it tends to veer off into the same directionless plight as Empire - though not as severe. I'm just not feeling it.
Last Trip (In Flight) is pretty cool. I was worried that this album was getting off on the wrong foot. The album is picking up nicely. I'm digging it. Trippy cool, atmospheric and all the things that struck me about the first album.
Me Plus One - me likey. A rather symphonic, lush and textured little gem.
Sun/Rise/Light/Flies is a nice psychadelic trip you can sink your head into, and the bass is groovy. This one's got it. I really love it. I can't wait to hear it live.
Apnoea - this one busted my nice buzzy little trip into the summer of love. It's not bad, kind of breaky, a bit quirky and fast paced which is interesting, but I'm not so sure about this song. Overall it just doesn't feel right. Maybe it's the placement on the album?
By My Side brings you back into the trippiness, though it's somewhat melancholy, it's a song held together by a lucious little groove in the chorus. Not bad at all. The light airy break is kind of cool, too.
The next song is Stuntman. I was worried when the thick pulsing buzz came in, but it all came together when the beat kicked up and the song gained substance. Very electro-groove. I don't mean to compare, but I have to admit there's elements of this song that remind me a bit of Underworld.
Back to the comparisons (sorry) but Seek & Destroy is a bit too close to OMD for comfort. Not that OMD are necessarily bad, but...
The 2nd to last song, British Legion, is a nice melodic and nearly acoustic break from the rest of the album. I quite like this one, a lot actually, but have a feeling that it might be lost in the thick of everything else going on in the album. Still a great song though, back to summery loved up feel some of the other songs have.
The album closes with The Doberman, which is rather dark and probably influenced by what they've been through over the past couple of years. It's worth a second listen, it's got a lot going on and the climactic peak in the middle is way melodramatic. Overall, this song's kind of a noisy, self indulgent downer - but I can't say right now whether I think it works.
Another listen is due. I'm hoping the songs that didn't do it for me now might grow on me. But the songs I liked, I really liked.

I really miss the idm/ambient-esque soundscapes that made the first album stand out from the rest of the guitar bands hype. The songs are ok, some good, but it didn't grab me as the first album did. 'Club Foot' was a fucking ace track to begin with. Great mix of electrona with rock. I miss that sort of vibe on this album. This is more of a pop album with less room for experiments.

There are good songs on the album, sneaker, you'll be the best judge of that. But I know how you feel. Kasabian are one of my favorite bands to have come out in recent years. I want the new album to rock my socks off the way the first one did. But even still, I hope they can keep it together. I think there's big things ahead for Kasabian if they can keep it together. I plan on sticking by them to see where they go...

I haven't heard the album yet, but if they've dropped that style..... hmmmm, that was the whole point of Kasabian for me. However I'm still keen to hear it. I dig the single and the B-Side.
