Ok, so it goes a little something like this!
9pm, dead on, DJing finishes and on comes... Tomorrow Never Knows! Didn't see that one coming. I was expecting the
new intro (No Path to Follow) but they obviously wanted to give a Surrender feel to the evening. All was looking
promising. I was fully prepared for an entirely new set list at this point.
But then... the acid loop kicks in and I just know it's gonna be Galvanise! Out booms the old classic "Don't Hold
Back" and people are getting excited. The crowd is great!
We go through Galvanise into Burst Generator before Ali Love booms out Do It Again which was lacking a little in
bass clarity for my liking but was awesome none-the-less. At this point I'll mention Small Gripe #1: The mid-range
sound was absolutely fantastic, but it seemed to be a little dead in the sub-bass region (See Under the Influence
below).
Anyhoo, the show speeds on! The scary clown appears (you know the drill) and everyone Gets Themselves High! Then,
blowing all else before it away comes HBHG which stomps the place down. Everyone knows it, everyone loves it and it
was great - the entire venue was jumping and that's saying a lot becuase it's a BIG venue!
Now, Small Gripe #2: I don't like Midnight Madness. It seemed such a comedown after HBHG but hey, we moved swiftly
through it into Out Of Control/Don't Fight It Feel It/It Doesn't Matter and then Temptation/Star Guitar. Part 1
concluded. Me happy.
The set list continued as it has done for the final part of the tour:
Surface To Air
Under The Influence (see "Small Gripe #1" above - I wasn't blown off my feet by the sub-bass!)
Saturate
Believe
Acid Children
Golden Path
Chemical Beats
before the Bros retreated. Now I thought to my little self, what are they going to cook up for an encore? I suppose
therefore Small Gripe #3 is entirely our own fault for speculating on the forum... it was an amazing encore (Leave
Home -> Block Rocking Beats -> Sunshine Underground) but it wasn't guest vocalised or the such like. As I say, nobody to blame but ourselves for getting hopes up and MY GOD, BRB was intense - again the entire place was moving and surging and, as I said, the sound quality for 99.9999% of it was absolutely awesome - incredible actually, probably the best I've heard at their gigs.
The visuals were of brilliant quality as usual and when the lights went up they really did an amazing job of illuminating the entire building which is, as you all know, an incredible place.
Oh, and I almost forgot to mention: all the billboards outside were for Brotherhood!
That's my little review of the evening - got a little tired typing it half-way through (as you can probably tell from the way the tracklist starts being listed, rather than described) but it was an absolutely brilliant evening! Where I've put my Small Gripes, they really are "small" and I'm trying to be constructively critical. Don't get me wrong - the gig was awesome - amazing - fantastic - I'm glad I was there:
a part of Chemical Brothers history.
