New York is a Boschian, claustrophobic shit hole that reeks of urine and vomit and is populated by the most paranoid and hostile people in the known world.

IMO of course. I haven't been there since 9/11, that might have improved things.

I remember trying to order a sandwich in a NY diner once...

waitress: "whaddaya want!? whaddaya want!? WHADDAYA WANT!!?!?"

me: "uh, a grill cheese sandwich please?"

waitress: "YOU WANNA GRILLED CHEESE SANDWICH? THAT'S WHAT YOU WANT? YOU WANT THAT, HUH!?!?"

me: "nevermind, I'll just be going"

waitress: "YOU DON'T WANT OUR GRILLED CHEESE? OUR GRILLED CHEESE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YA?!? HEY MURRAY! THIS PRICK OVER HERE SAYS OUR GRILLED CHEESE AIN'T GOOD ENOUGH FOR HIM!"

me: *runs from establishment as huge, grease covered cook comes out from kitchen*
