Well, it was an absolutely ridiculous thing to do, with no excuse whatsoever. It doesn't matter if Matterazzi had told Zizou that he had just finished smurfing his daughter, there is no excuse, no rhyme, no reason for that headbutt.
That being said, Zizou was amazing for France this tournament and everyone will forget about the headbutt after a few weeks. Zidane's legacy I do not think should be tarnished by the incident. Both teams should be very happy for having reached the final and there is no shame in defeat.

Here's what happened, according to The Guardian :
Zidane had been insulted by Materazzi during the whole match, then at the 110th minute, Zidane told him :
- Ordinanza de tirare il costume ! (Stop pulling my shirt !)
- Taciti, enculo, hai solamente cio che merite... (Shut up you bastard, you only have what you deserve...)
- si e cio... (Yeah yeah, right...)
Then when he turned back and was leaving, Materazzi told him a very unpleasant thing :
- meritate tutti ci, voi gli enculato di musulmani, sporchi terroristici (You all deserve this, you dirty muslim bastard terrorists)
Then Zidane walked back and :
I think what Materazzi said (if he really said that) deserved a red card as much as what Zidane did...

If Matterazzi said that, then yes, he certainly should have been red-carded and probably suspended and fined as well. There's absolutely no room in the game for things like that.
However, it's much harder to hear an insult in a noisy stadium than it is to see a ridiculously vicious headbutt.
Regardless of the provocation, for the sake of his teammates and his country, Zidane needed to be the better man in the situation and was not.
