thesouphead, I see what you are saying. I admit it was an unusual choice for them to remix a big pop star like Kylie. I remember the "what the fucks" that went on here when news of the remix broke. I wouldn't imply the Chems made a poor decision to remix Minogue, but as I'm not terribly familiar with everything she's done I wouldn't denigrate her by saying she hasn't been a strong figure within her genre. I understand what you mean when you say the Chems have always remixed people who were innovative and highly respected within their (sub)genres - but where does that leave Fatboy Slim who lately, has become the object of snide comments of disillusioned fans who wished he'd go back to the days of Better Living, or worse yet, has become the object of snide and petty comments in the press who've proclaimed him nothing more than a joke? Or Method Man, who (respect to his music always, plus I've enjoyed the movies he's been in) took to doing deodorant commercials in the US a couple of years ago? Surely these people are still relevant, and you have to admit those remixes are slammin' ;)

Honestly I am nothing more than a casual fan of Kylie Minogue, I'm not familiar with her entire catalogue, but I do have a sense of admiration for the woman and understand and respect her in the sense that within pop music, her genre, she does hold a lot of weight. Maybe not in the US where she peaked with Fever and was pretty much gone in a flash - but elsewhere around the world she is pretty massive and steady. Her career is actually quite long, she's been singing and in the business for a while.

Her record Body Language (which Slow appears on) drew a lot of harsh criticism from her fans because of the change in musical direction - not typical Kylie that her fans expected. I doubt she was reinventing herself like say, Madonna does every five minutes but at the very least she was willing to make a change (I don't know if it was solely her idea, or the idea of her handlers) in the way she went about her career - especially a change that breaks out of her and her fans' comfortable niches.

I don't know if we'll ever know the real reason Tom and Ed chose to remix Slow, maybe she'd been bugging them for a long time to remix one of her songs, maybe they find her charming, maybe the see her as innovative, I don't know - or maybe just maybe, they plain and simple liked Slow for what it is and felt they could do a lot with it.

Whirly, after the success of Fever, the label was chomping at the bit to get Kylie in the studio with all the big name producers. At one point she had a meeting with Pharrell, but she decided that it just wouldn't work. I really think that she has a strong desire not to be remembered as a pop-tart and craves some degree of credibility. Whether she'll get it, or whether she really deserves it is questionable (doubtful, even) though. Body Language is still a pop album, but wasn't following the 2004 cookie cutter pop album formula; unfortunately, neither was it the trendsetter the way that Fever was.

Just thought of who the Chems should remix, though: Goldfrapp.

Muse would also be good. They have a great live show that won me over, despite having never heard any of their tracks beforehand. Probably the best concert I saw this year.

On Radio Soulwax part 6 there is a mix of Star Guitar and Weezer - Buddy Holly that is ok, well is sounds a bit crap at points but the idea is good.

How about Beck? That would be cool. A royksopp remix (for the chems or the other way round) would be excellent too. Royksopp and the Chems are my favourite remixers 8).

The chems are pretty good at picking people to mix. I still think their mixes of MSP, any of them, are pretty great. Personally, I think they should go completely out of genre. ie pick Dave Matthews or something. Kind of like all those remixes of Sarah McLaughlin (sp?) that are out there..... all very good, though completely different.
