Bwah. What a trip. Cool old-skool breaks/deebee with a sketchy-cool vocal.

I was kind of loving on that little whimsical Chems track Scale yesterday. I know some people here have commented on that song (in not the best ways) but I like how the concept of scales/octaves is rather simple but the song is well executed, with rich and textured movement. Melodies evolving out of scales in various keys, while other accent notes are played one octave from another (a full 8 degreees) - even the 'tone' of the percussion is played out in octaves. It's a tightly wrapped concept which seems to work, and sounds like an experiment to see how far the scales can be pushed.

I've always used the word whimsical to describe this track not because the song is erratic but because of the lively movement within the song. For some odd reason I get images of tin toys being wound up in my brain when I hear it.

City and Colour - Comin' Home

Fantastic acoustic song from the guitarist/melodic vocalist from fantastic Canadian screamo band Alexisonfire.

"Well I've been down to Georgia

I've seen the streets in the West

I've driven down the 90, hell I've seen America's best

I've been through the Rockies, I've seen Saskatoon

I've driven down the highway 1 just hopin' that I'd see you soon

Cause I'm comin' home, I'm comin' home

I've never been to Alaska, but I can tell you this,

I've been to Lincoln, Nebraska and hell you know it ain't worth shit

I've been through Nova Scotia, Sydney to Halifax

I'll never take any pictures cause I know I'll just be right back

Cause I'm comin' home, I'm comin' home

I've seen a palace in London, I've seen a castle in Wales

but I'd rather wake up beside you and breathe that ol' familiar smell

I never thought you could leave me, I figured I was the one

but I understand your sadness so I guess I should just hold my tongue

But I'm comin' home, I'm comin' home

I know that we're takin' chances, you told me life was a risk

but I just have one last question...

will it be my heart or will it be his?

I'm comin' home"

Franz Ferdinand - Come On Home

Their debut album is a classic of teenage romance and angst, up there with 'Mellon Collie' in that regard. Listening to this sort of album, esp. right now, just takes me to a place of jaded comfort. Where everything is melodrama and nothing is right, yet a wistful sense of happiness is felt. The world we know is falling apart and that's alright.

This song, Come On Home, in particular is getting me right now.

"Although my lover lives in a place that I can't live

I kind of find I like a life this lonely

It rips and pierces me in places I can't see

I love the rip of nerves, the rip that wakes me

So I'm dissatisfied, I love dissatisfied

I love to feel there's always more that I need

So come on home

You're where you want to be, I'm where I want to be

Caught up chasing everything I've ever wanted

I replace you easily, replace pathetically

I flirt with any flighty thing that falls my way

But how I needed you, when I needed you

Let's not forget we are so strong, so bloody strong

Come on home

Blue light falls upon your perfect skin

Falls, and you draw back again

Falls, and this is how I fell

And I can not forget this

And I can not forget this

Come on home

So come on home

But don't forget to leave"
