My view: NEW BOARD
I don't understand this "hacking" idea at all. Sure if someone is able to compromise the server and take control of it then we would get to somewhere but that's a) hard and b) probably very illegal and c) would gather some attention (the wrong kind).
I think the "hacking" people are actually suggesting here is that we only need to gain access to the administrator account. Wrong! There is no admin checklist item for: "Would you like to have spambots swamping your board? [ ] Yes [ ] No". phpboard and other common forum software is constantly getting hacked to pieces by spammers which leads to new security holes and therefore more access for the spammers. This forum has been running from I guess the year 2002, the forum software is likely to be from that year or even older. In that time probably a zillion exploits have been discovered.

Let's see if I can sort of cross-post this message here and to the discussion topic.

Frankly, as much as I hate to admit it, we need to occasional newbie to come along and stimulate things. We need Tom and Ed to come by and say a few words once in awhile.
We wouldn't get these things on a new board, no matter how many sticky threads we had pointing people there.
Frankly, I think we should be self governing and just hand out the mod password to everyone.
Except Slipvin.

I thought the people who were talking about "hacking this board"had good reasons to believe that was the right descision. Hence that i choose "first hack , THAN new board " But soundertows post puts new light on this case as we say in holland :P
Lets see what everybody else chooses.

With that, we could ban IPs and block a lot of the spam, as well as mod other people.

We cannot fight machines on their terms. One spambot can flood the board with so many posts that even if we all act as moderators and say remove 100 posts per day per person we would still drown.

The concept of a new board is cool, but in reality, it would wither and die.

See , there we go already. Who is going to choose wich persons will be moderating ?!
Whoever makes the new board decides. Or whoever guesses the admin password. Or, like it is now, whoever has the surface2air password.
The interweb is NOT a democracy, nor is freedom of speech a right.

I like the phpbb style if we do move to a new board, though obv. a newer version is required.
I'm a member of www.sixcrazyminutes.com, a major Liverpool forum, and I love the format and features. It's so familiar coming from this board to there and yet they've got editing, etc. that we've been crying out for for ages.

That's one of the new phpBB style ones, there is another kind that I'm aware of, illustrated by http://www.pumapeople.com/ The layout and usuability is really friendly
Now thats what i call a forum. 8) (Maybe with a silver template to feel more like home)

I really like it on this forum, because its the official one - Im sure there are lots of other forums out there and if another forum is made it would probably die away somewhere and we'd probably end up coming back here.
I say wait around until the admin wakes up/update with chemical6 and in the meantime hand out the mod user and pass to those who come on often like iguana, benj, mips, stash, jeanie, whirly, etc etc - cause were not all online at the same time, so in that sense everyone would be modding instead of putting it down to just one or two people.
