Can any of you guys give me some advice on where to start on Dj'ing ie mixing tracks etc? Is it just a case of getting a mixer? Or what is the crack there? What are the principles of djing and what are the recommendations.
I was thinking of saving up for an Mac Book just to have anyway and I see Dj's using them all the time as like a way of channeling music instead of vinyl's- that is right...right?
Anyway I was thinking of getting one of those maybe a turn table or two and a mixer some head phones.. Would that be right or what, I honestly have no clue so go easy on me you guys, straighten this young lad out Laughing

Buy a direct drive turn table, they don't use rubber bands like the cheapest one. There are really 2 types of mixers, ones for hip-hop and scratching, and others for mixing songs, find which you want...Try local classified adds, in the US we have craigslist.org, they are much cheaper there than used at stores or pawn ships. Definitly good to know a lot of friends, be in a place with cool record shops, don't limit yourself to certain genres- if you like a lot it probably means other people will too, and there are good books on djing you should check out. One out there I cannot remember the title but it's done by 2 guys, really breaks it down to its simplest form and has great quotes from every DJ, the chems are in there some place. I'll find it in the near future unless someone beats me to it.

Was thinking this mixer. Numark and it has 3 channels which I would like, and its 70. Was thinking of getting a pair of Gemini Turntables.

Those are belt drive turn-tables, you do not want those. they are cheapest but that is because they use a big rubber-band inside like a bike. No good turntables have these, they break easily and aren't as accurate in playing a consistant speed. Driect drive are a little more but I'd buy used if you're on a budget, ebay has some good deals. I'm pretty indifferent to most mixers, so getting semi-cheap one and more expensive turn-table would probably be better

as above:
get how to dj properly
get some direct drive dex
practise, practise, practise
plus - get out and dj in front of people. 90% of dj'ing comes from experience. theres no point twaddling away in your bedroom for hours, you gotta get out there. youll be suprised at how different playing out is.
oh - build a record collection! if u aint got the tunes, you cant rock the party. dig?? ;)

Whats a sampler do?
Is that all I need - two turn tables a mixer and a big ass vinyl collection?
I have most of my stuff on data ie my computer, I was thinkin of using a laptop for that stuff. But you cant scratch none of that stuff or like physically stop it whereas you can with a vinyl. Is there anyway you can have stuff playing from your laptop and then fuck around with the sound? Can ya do that with a mixer basically? Or do i need something more if i wanna go that extra mile?
Anyway I've came back with some more possibilities.

Im going to go with this if it turns out I have a tight budget because I really like the idea of 3 channels not just two + Its not a bad price.

If I have enough cash Im thinking of getting this one instead, again I like the 3 channel thing and I dont know this one is by behringer and I think theyre good [ Or am I wrong? ] also, it looks like it can do alot more..

Same- If I have even more money, this was one, I really like this look of this one and I dont know but i really like the idea of more channels because then that means.. more mixing right?
Anyway I really like all 3 of these mixers - just a case of budgeting now. But if I had the money probably go for the last one there - The Behringer VMX1000
Turntables/Decks
I made some improvements here, all these shortlisted turntables are direct drive.

I like this one I dont know if its any good but its direct drive and its about 200 a pair. Which isn't bad I guess.

a sampler lets you sample a chunk of audio and loop it/manipuate it. I'd leave that for the moment and get used to the basics of beat mixing. if you've got a laptop you can do this further down the line when you're happy mixing two records together.
decks:
my advice is this. if you can stretch to it buy some good second hand technics. they're basically industry standard, well built and if you look after them will last you a lifetime. and if you decide further down the line that DJing isn't for you they hold their value. cheap decks don't.
as for a mixer. forget beat counters, those 'punch in' buttons, 5 million channels and FX etc.
at entry level at least the more "features" the mixer has crammed onto it you'll find that:
a) it sounds like shit. the more jiggery pokery under the bonnet the worse it'll sound.
b) the lay out on the front panel will be a pain to use. the EQ pots will be too close together, you'll end up knocking switches or leaning on the punch in button. very few mixers are ergonomically designed - I swear most of them are designed by people who don't actually use the fucking things.
simple. 2 chan, good EQ's with a decent cut and an uncluttered layout is what you need.
why you don't need loads of channels. a two channel mixer will accommodate two turntables and you'll be able to plug your laptop into one of the line inputs and flip from phono (deck) to line (laptop) as you need to.
trust me in the beginning you'll not be mixing three sources (2 bits of a vinyl and a laptop input or CD deck) at once.
if you've got a large collection of digital music on your laptop and you want to use that then look at something like serato. this basically involves an interface between your mixer and laptop and a time-coded bit of vinyl which means you can effectively mix with mp3's in the same way you would with a record. you can cut and scratch and cue the same way you do with records.
http://www.serato.co...atchlive/setup/
it'll cost you a bit of money - I really would get to grips with DJing before you make a purchase like that.
if you want to manipulate stuff coming from your laptop then use a program on your laptop like ableton. it'll sound a whole lot better than having on board FX on your mixer. plus it'll be a thousand time flexible too. but as I said above. I'd concentrate on getting a decent set of decks and mixer and get to grips with the basics of DJing - once you're happy with that you can look at adding samplers, using ableton with your DJing, getting a CDJ etc
good luck
