the good thing about Reason are the fx's, the compression, for example, is really good, so if you want some fucked up breakbeats you have an interesting tool there.. (with redrum module of course, or the sampler. )

see, this is the thing about recommending software for people - it's very subjective. personally, i think reasons compression sucks hairy arse (no offence furyloops!) and i'd much rather use a VST compressor like the waves R-Comp, which you'd only be able to do in fruitylopps, and not reason. BUT it's all just opinion - there is no right or wrong answer. If it works for you, it works for you, and thats lovely.

i'd agree reasons effects generally are pretty cool - the new reverb unit on 2.5 is nice.

i think the imprtant thing to look at aside from the sound of it is the funcionality - if iguanapunk uses a lot of sampled breaks in his music, then maybe it's better to stick with fruityloops, where you can import wavs directly. you can't do that with reason except for through the sampler, where theres no beat slicing facility's. you could do it through the dr rex, but that puts a weird sound on the loop, its not so 'pure' if you know what i mean (again, all just opinion!!) i dunno, can you do beatslicing in fruityloops within the audio sequencer??? you know like hitpoint detect in cubase sx?? i assume you can, or what would be the point in having audio tracks???

Hmmm, I know this may not be relevent, but I feel everybody should keep this in mind when creating music: it's about the expression not the materials! If you've got this fairly complete idea of how your music is going to sound and how you're going to approach the creation, I feel you're not going to have as much fun. This is why (with exceptions) produced pop music sounds so bland and shitty. Same with all those crappy bands so many start, and with most electronic music people create solely for people on numbing drugs to dance to.

Now, I'm not saying you're like these people -- and I'm also not saying that you're trying to fuck up the world with crazy innovative music. All I'm saying is that if you get something suited to a specific purpose you'll, for the most part, make that specific type of music and little else. I started recording with anything I could find and, trust me, you can make any type of music with a guitar, a set of drums and an open mind. Electronic, rock, punk, jazz, classical, pop -- whatever!

It is, after all, your decision. If you'd like to seriously create music you love, keep your options open. Use Reason and FruityLoops, as well as anything else you can find. I was just recording now in Garageband (gold app, btw!) and I find myself jumping to various different apps and playing with the mixer on my desk. Everytime I write something, a new world opens up. I'm sure you didn't mean that you were going to just do breaks & stuff, and you weren't gonna limit yourself; I just felt lending my 2 cents and I hope you'll keep my words in mind.

you're right.. but it's just an option for him, i'm not saying this is THE software. I know there's a whole world of vst plug ins , instruments and hosts..

good job i don't use generally use logic then ;) :P

I agree with what you say abut not limiting yourself, but i think it's important to look at the way you work when you write music and whether or not any new software is actually going to add to your writing process. if not, you just end up with loads of software which you couldn't possibly have time to learn how to use to it's fullest extent, and which ultimately might not be any good for you.

far better to be minimal with your equipment and get the best out of it rather than not mastering the software you've already got. and if you can get your choice of equipment right in the first place, this makes the whole process much easier.

anyway, we've scare iguanapunk away now with our geek ramblings ;-) :)
