I read a good theory, based on this old, old interview from season 1 with the creators, that the entire mystery is linked to the first 5 seconds of the entire series.

This isn't the first time Jack's done all this. He goes back, more than once possibly, trying to fix things.

I guess the end of the series will have jack waking up in the jungle again.
