I've had an ipod for over an yr, and all this while I've been filling it up randomly, avoiding that big day when I have to sit down and clean the bastard.

Anyway, my problem's this - when I view the summary of my iPod - it shows 18.68GB of music, 8.09 GB of Other (the orange shite), with 1.05 gb of free/white space.

Now how/ where do I find/ view this 8.09GB of Other stuff, and delete it? I can't seem to view anything on my ipod through itunes or on the piece

Somebody help pls.

Alzo - when I view the ipod in my windows explorer, it shows two different music folders - one root music folder, and one under ipod_control - can I delete the latter one if it's duplicating my music, or is it just an image?

Also, when I view the photos folder in the windows explorer, it shows me 21MB of JPEGs, which I can't seem to find on my iPod when I look into the photos section - why?

Someone help me - I've been pulling out my hair trying to figure this out!

first thing you need to do is put your ipod on the ground.

second go out to the hardware store and purchase a hammer. i prefer a lump hammer although a sledge hammer gives the same effect with much more drama.

thirdly go home

fourth make some tea, relax, watch some tv....

fifth go into the room where your ipod is on the ground and with out warning smash the fucking shit out of it for being so fucking annoyingly stupid and doing stupid things like crashing every 5 mins and not letting you delete shit off it that you dont want!

sixth go back to watching tv

JacksRevenge, do not do anything until you can browse around mac support!!! One false move.... I am reminded of the Jeanie incident a couple of years ago where she lost a lot of music. It was awful because she couldn't recover it.

Check out mac support before you follow up on your endeavor:

ok, im going to re-type this, here i go!

when u buy an i-pod, it doesn't come with all the space it tells you it has, it takes up space for the games, calender/dates, programming, etc. but this is roughly how it is.

-.3g for a 2g (- = minus)

-.5g for a 4g

-.7g for a 6g

-5g for a 30g

-7g for a 60g

So really, when you buy an ipod, apple is really ripping you off somewhat. So youre guaranteed to have some space missing. As for your 8g problem, you might want to replace the battery. I know some people might not think that that has anything to do with it but it does. If the battery is old or was left out in harsh conditions, it can really mess around with the ipod (i know from experience with my 30g). First spend like 20$ @ bestbuy or sumthin on a new battery(which you can install yourself, no need to send it to apple right away) and see if that fixes your problem. If it doesn't check if you still have youre warranty. Mine did something similar and i still had my 1 year warranty left. So I sent it in. If your warranty is gone, there are specialty shops that deal with these kinds of problems. Any electronics store can do it i think. Even bestbuy fixes ipods sometimes. Either way can work, I would check if you still have the warranty first and then move on to buying a battery or sending into a repair shop. Remember, if all else fails, refer to chemdup's post.

BTW - I know all this because my brother used to be an Apple help desk worker. But he got soo many ranting calls from people who were pissed at Apple, that he quit. lol

- wow i sure downsized this post from the half hour one.

Hey thx prochem! That sounds wonderful - just that I have no battery problems - my pod is about an yr old, and the battery lasts me as good as it did when it was new - i've used it very less - mostly in my car.

Is there anyway I can remove all the games and all other stuff, since I use my ipod only for music.

Here's a snap of the summary - see if you can help me redeem that precious 8gb.

Should I try reformatting the ipod?

1. all hard drives are rated as 1KB = 1000B, 1MB = 1000KB, 1GB = 1000MB but really it's 1024 each. this makes the actually capacity at about 93% what it's rated at

2. 'other' includes system files, videos photos, applications, contacts, calendars, et c. ALSO any files stored on it strictly as a hard drive, i.e. the files were stored in the main directory of the volume

Glako - I use my pod only for music - no videos, no pics, nothing, except the file system.

Is there a way I can remove all other root folders and options too, so as to utilize max space? I feel cheated losing 8gb of space on a 30gb deal. :(

Thx for your help!

no, you can't delete the games and stuff, it sucks but theres nothing you can do. There are websites that will reformat it for peanuts.

the games et c should not take up 6 gigs... that's odd

and removing the system software will not save you much at alll, but will open up the opportunity for trouble

For some reason, when i try to delete stuff on external drives on my mac, it creates a hidden folder called .trashes where all that shit still is. Really annoying... If you're runnign windows, this isn't your problem, but if you're on a mac, you might want to search for the folder.

Ok - thanks everyone who chipped in here with help. Really greatful, most of u were bang on. Since I was at this mall yesterday I decided to drop into the Apple centre. Seems like this is a well known problem with all Windows based iPods - loads of bugs keep adding on with time, and hence my 8gb others plight. Anyway the guy told me to just reformat the pod, and like he said - kaboom vanished the others, and I have been able to reclaim 9 gb of space on my pod - WHAT A FUCKIN FEELLING! :)

Also while I was at the centre I feigned surprise at the Seinheiser stocks at the Apple centre, like I owne 20 sets and never knew I could buy them in India now, managed to pickup the catalogue (yeah just that's quite a booty for me!), and also got my recently chewed to pieces by my kittens earplugs replaced with a brand new set, much after my warranty is over. I LOVE apple! :)
