being an American high schooler, Superbad is my FAVORITE movie ever.
Fogal: They let you chose any name you want when you get down there
Evan: and you landed on Mclovin??
Fogal: Well yeah, it was either that or Mohamed
Seth: Why the FUCK would it be between that and Mohamed?!

The American Audience likely found that film funny in the same way they found Napoleon Dynamite funny - because it roots for the geeky underdog.
I thought Superbad was all right and there were so funny parts, but I didn't find it to be a laugh riot a minute. Then again I really didn't care much for Napoleon Dynamite which I felt was a waste of my time. Maybe I'm just getting old. :P

This movie is awesome. I saw it first in canadian french. They have weird words for all the "dick" "balls" and stuff like that, totally different from our french words for it, so that's the thing that made us laugh. Then watched it in real French, and it was really funny too, and then in English, it was even funnier :) This movie is so bad, but that's good

@iguana: Your logic is "very mediocre!!" [runs to bedroom and slams door]
i own it, it's a pretty awesome film. the greatness is in it's absurdity. it wouldn't be funny to americans if we were like this, it'd actually be really boring. but still, every girl i know who saw it asked something like "do you talk like this around your guy friends," in a sort of scared and disturbed tone.
glad you finally saw it, jeanie.

I really liked Superbad because it did a great job of truly capturing the awkwardness of teenage sexuality. American Pie did this to some extent, but Superbad seemed to have a bit more humility.
I identified with the social faux pas littering the story--I don't know if I would call any character in the film a "dick." There are layers of self-involvement that come with involving oneself in social interaction which are pretty thick, but nothing I'd consider noteworthy.
All in all, the characters are loveable, if fairly two-dimensional; the story absolutely ridiculous, though there are believable moments that I think are common to many growing up, e.g. parting ways as friends and embracing future paths; and there isn't too much that's contrived.
I laughed my balls off and was warmed by the connections between the characters. There's not much more I ask from comedies.
