Hi all, I'm looking for a distortion pedal that would work nicely with synth sounds to get a really rough n aggressive early Chems-like distortion. Something similar to the distortion on 'Chemical Beats' would be great. I'm sure there's a few people on here that are really into recording their own music n know a fair bit about synths, if so, do you have any recommendations/favorites when it comes to sticking synths through distortion pedals?
Thanks...
Thanks...

the chems used a boss hm2 for chemical beats
i'm sure something simple like a boss sd1 or od2 would be ok too
an electro harmonix big muff is awesome for more dirty sound

Ah, cool, thanks for the info. Yeah I was looking at a few of the Boss distortion pedals. They're quite cheap to pick up 2nd hand on eBay too. Someone on another forum recommended a Boss metal pedal that was used on a Daft Punk track, sounded really cool... http://www.youtube.c...h?v=AJyMBfQz4_8

I've had three :
Boss DS-1 :
It's really no good. The sound is too low, the distortion is not very nice, a lot of noise, don't get one
Boss MetalZone MT-2 :
Very very good one, that's the one the Chems use on Chemical Beats on the Juno 106.
You can see the result here (I reproduced Daft Punk's Rollin & Scratchin with it) :
Chemical Beats : http://benji.ng.free...eats_remake.mp3
Electro Harmonix Little Big Muff :
That one is good too. The distortion is a bit lighter, more subtle. But very enjoyable and warm.
So I would advise you to get an MT-2. It's not expensive and very good.

You sure The Chems used the HM-2? Can't find nothing on the internet about them using one.
Don't suppose anyone has some really old magazine interviews with them on their gear??? (usual sorta stuff you might find in FutureMusic, SoundonSound etc), be really curious to read some stuff like that

in the fan questions in their blog tom says
http://www.thechemic...2010/04/13/125/
"Johnny Luv’s Question:
How long did it take and what did you make chemical beats on????…apart from a 303?
TOM:
Wrote that song in my bedroom at my folks house… i made it with a Roland Juno 106, an Akai S1000 sampler, a Boss Heavy Metal guitar pedal, a Fender Telecaster guitar and a short wave radio……no 303,the lead sound is the Juno through the guitar pedal."

Aaah, thats great. Really surprised no one had asked them before n it wasnt mentioned anywhere else. Cheers for that.
Yeah back to the old magazine interviews with them.. only one I can find at the moment is from We Are The Night with remixmag, they mention all the gear they used n what their approach was to writing the album, im sure you've probably read it before tho... http://emusician.com...ug07/index.html
