Hey all, I got a bit bored this afternoon so I thought why not at least appear a bit productive with my life so i listened to Battle Scars a couple of times, slowing it down and stuff and here's what i came up with as the lyrics.

I'm not sure about a couple of parts so suggestions are needed.

Battle Scars Lyrics

There's no path to follow(x2)

There's a line in the sand,

Put there by a man,

By a man who's children built the castles made of stone.

There's a man in the sky,

Giving reasons why,

That line grows deeper like the shackles round our bones.

Hold on to my arms,

Here come battle scars,

It's the final charge,

Here come battle scars.

There's a child born,

To a land of scorn,

Sees past the borders and the lords who hold his hand.

He was lead like a lamb,

All part of the plan,

His castle crumbles as he walks out of his land.

Hold on to my Arms,

Here come battle scars,

It's the final charge,

Here come battle scars.

This is what we are,

Here come battle scars,

This is where we are,

Here come battle scars.

There's no path to follow(x3)

Living for the reasons of the dead that move to paper

from their heads into my fingers and my neck leaving me strangled

by the rent i have no purpose in this land

Have I forgotten how to stand up with the humour and the need

I've got to find a way to be...

I Just turn up the stereo

I can't survive without the gold(?)

This culture's falling off its feet

I've got to find a brand new beat..

..beat(beat)....beat..

..beat(beat)....beat..

..beat(beat)....beat..

There's a road ahead,

'tween the live and dead,

Church bells are ringing like the panic in my head...

Step, Step,

one by one,

walk into the setting sun,

Water's rising, rising fast,

History catching up at last,

....?, FBI, no one to follow but old man time,

Time, time, take us back,

Before the line was drawn,

Before the sky turned black.(black, black, black)

"I needed to believe in something...I needed to believe!"

I'm really not feeling this track, even after many listens, soooo sorry!

Like the 'There's no path to follow bit', but it's just not a track that appeals to me. :-(

My life is a boat, being blown by you. With nothing ahead, just the deepest blue... To me you're like a setting sun. You rise then you're gone.

that question mark is:

"Danger ahead, death behind, no one to follow but old man time"

^ ooops. That was my hubby who posted that!

It's funny how subjective music is. Battle Scars was a tune I instantly connected with. To me, I think it's probably one of the most reflective and introspective songs the Chems have to offer.

Thanks for clearing that up stash, I was kinda wonderin why he suddenly went on about the FBI!! :D

That's pretty much how i feel about the track too, whirly. There's just something about it. I dunno if it's the music or Willy Masons' voice on the track but every time I listen to it, it grows on me more and more. It's kinda reminiscent of Tom Waits on this and I love Tom Waits.

I love listening to this then Sunshine Underground or Saturate on my way to work. Gets me in a mood to deal with anything!

You going to be around a little bit later on? Like in a couple of hours? We're leaving in a few minutes to take a hike in the canyon, but you know I'm always up for a chat!

Bit of a bump this, but what do you guys reckon this song is about?

I did wonder if it was about the war in Iraq, but I think it's more about the state the world is in environmentally (or will be, especially if WW3 happens)

This is probably ludicrously erroneous, but I interpret the song as the Chems' look back at the whole Setting Sun scandal.

Hence:

There's a line in the sand

(The endless number of copyright laws The Beatles hold)

Put there by a man

(A singular personification of The Beatles)

By a man whose children who built the castles made of stone

(The fanbase that built The Beatles up into what they are, even now)

There's a man in the sky

(The law that enforces said copyrights)

Giving reasons why

(The fact that it is, indeed, breaking the law to infringe on copyright)

That line grows deeper like these shackles round our bones

(The inhibitions put on artists trying to sample copyrighted material)

There's a child born

(A singular personification of the Chems)

To a land of scorn

(The haphazard environment that Sample-hungry DJs live in)

Sneaks past the borders and the lords that hold his hand

(The alleged sampling they did, thus getting past the "Border" of the copyrights. The lords may be a reference to Sir Richard Branson)

He was led like a lamb

(The insatiable desire to sample that the Chems have)

All part of the plan

(The natural sampling DJs do)

This castle crumbles as he walks out of this land

(The mighty copyright stronghold of The Beatles being wrecked by Setting Sun)

This is what we own

(Setting Sun was, indeed, still the Chems' track, for better or worse)

This is where we are

(They will always be the Brothers, no matter what)

Living for the reasons of the dead

(Only, as of now, half of the copyright holders are still alive. How would a suit be justified if only half of the people who owned the original would be compensated?)

That moved the paper from their heads

(The copyright in a different form. Whereas it just sat there collecting dust before Setting Sun, it was right in action when there was something to gain from it)

Into my fingers and my deadly view is strangled by the rent

(How badly off the Chems would be if they lost the suit)

I have no purpose in this land

(The Chems had better things to do than be sued for the use of a sample they may or may not have used)

Have I forgotten how to stand

(They had to hire a musicologist just to prove they didn't sample anything. :P)

Up with the humor and the need

(The Chems were, in fact, good people with no intent of stealing)

I've got to find a way to be

(They couldn't just ignore the case)

I just turn up the stereo

(The triumph of good music over all)

I can't survive without the cold

(Unknown)

This culture's fallen off its feet

(Take it literally)

I've got to find a brand new beat

(Also literally)

There's a road ahead 'tween the live and dead

(Again, the dead impacting the living)

Church bells are ringing like the panic in my head

(It couldn't have exactly been fun getting sued by the biggest pop culture icons ever, hm?)

Step, step, one by one

Walk into the Setting Sun

(This should be obvious)

Water's rising, rising fast

(They gradually had less and less room to negotiate anything)

History catching up at last

(A disbanded group suing an up-and coming one?)

Danger ahead, death behind

(There was no way to avoid the case)

No one to follow but old man time

(A reversal of fortune?)

Time, time, take us back before the line was drawn

Before the sky turned black.

(The restoration of everything to as it was before the suit)

Well, I assume I must have thoroughly bored you with my wall of text, eh? Mission accomplished. :)
