I have just watched at least 15 different video clips of Daft Punk's performance at the Coachella festival and i cannot believe I'm saying this, but i think Daft Punk are currently a better live electronic act than the Chems.

The way they set up the stage with that massive glowing pyramide, the background screens, lasers and the weird background octagonal colour-pulsing pipes - must be one of the best and most outrageous sets for any act i have seen.

Of course somebody would say that this can be seen as a gimmick that just makes the show look better - to which I agree, but there is another point - the way Daft Punk are recreating the songs live just seems to sound more fresh and interesting compared to Chems.

Daft Punk seem to be more relaxed and willing to mess around with their songs, creating some of the most amazing live mixes - the way the scratched synth sound from 'Da Funk' just goes on and on building up to a massive explosion with a breakbeats, the way they mix several songs on top of one another and just streching and cuting them at the same time, with the crowd energy going off the scales.

This is where I always had a slight 'problem' with the Chems live performance. They would always recreate their songs in a sort of 'rigid' way with the same structure, where you can't realy hear any difference in Hey Boy, Hey girl, or block rockin beats, wether it was performed in '99, '00, '02 or '05.

The look of their live set has also stayed pretty much the same since the '97 - '98 tour. The best 'look' of the live set was definitely during 'come with us' tour (fuji rocks on live DVD), where they had the 'front of the boat' shaped projection screen with the equipment on top of it and another round projection screen above - as well as the usual background screen and small side screens.

I must say i wasn't a big fan of the 'stripped down' look of their '05 tour with just a 'bare' equipment and a background screen.

Coachella festival forums are now buzzing with the posts about how this Daft Punk set is now considered the best in the entire history of this festival.

Many fans of the electronic music are saying that this show had surpased anything Chems , Underworld, Prodigy or Craftwerk have done in the past festivals, and i must agree.

I know it is way too early to talk about the new Chems album and next wourld tour (it will probably be another 3 or 4 years), but when they start touring live again, they will need to change their live sets radicaly, as even the last tour had a bit of 'same old, same old' feel to it.

Dont get me wrong, Chems will always be my number one love, and the live sets were something greatest that ever happend to me (saw them twice - '02 & '05), but i think they will need to change something to keep it fresh.

BTW, sorry about the long post, i got carried away.

An interesting post.

Clearly the Chems are two amazing electronic bands.

But really I feel after watching the videos chems are still better. Daft havnt performed in 9 years so there live set does sound fresh at the moment because we have not herd it in a while, whilst the chems have played many times in the last 10 years and revamping and making it sound fresh is harder.

I think that the chems do alter and play around with the tracks alot, for example BRB beats has had some new vocals added to it after being stripped down and reworked over time. HBHG is also different, if you listen and compare CWU tour and PTB tour you can hear that the beginning is different.

a few lights, a triangular stage and weird french men in robot suits, and everyone goes a bit punk crazy. and no one outside of coachella has heard the new daft punk!!

If someone want's an unbiased view, they should go to the Daft Punk forum. Posting shite like that here is just trolling, just begging for me to say 'Shut the fuck up'.

yeah, that's because they're mediocre musicians, who don't inspire enough of a following.

You know, GWAR puts on a better 'show' than either of them, but I don't listen to music because the band uses cool costumes and stage equipment.

I remember GWAR, freaks of note 8O

I wouldn't go as far as to say Daft Punk have no substance though.

I don't care about their robot outfits or their flashy live shows (although I'd love to see 1[just 1 ]) I'm sold by their rebelious nature.

The People: "This is Dance music"

Daft Punk: "No, Dance music can be whatever you want it to be"

The People: "Give us the best Dance album ever (again)"

Daft Punk: "Here's 'Human After All' - it has a strong theme of imperfection."

I hate taking sides but if I had to crit the Chems... - they're glory boys.

Daft Punk (even though they're super famous and are entitled to huge egos) remain fairly humble... and sport none of that arms in the air rubbish.

are you saying what chems have achieved in 10 years of live show daft punk did that in 1 night ? FUCK NO.

I agree that the daft punk show was some what cool but take away the robot suits, the pyramid stage, light show all you have is a decent house tracks. They weren't terribly bad live tracks (I must admit that HUMAN....ROBOT....bit gave me goosebumps) but just not good enough to even come close to chems.

I think the chemical brothers are a better act. :)

Daft punk have raised the standard. Chems will be back with another block rockin beat soon, and without a doubt, will set a new standard. I think :D

No, not at all. I think they're both equally good at what they do (being different styles of Electronica) So what's the question here? Who's got a better live performance? Well they're both basically the same. 2 guys with a bunch of synths & lights. Either duo could pitch up with 2 turntables and mixer and I'd be happy.

at least i can afford the extremely rare daft punk figures
