Permission for song usage in game

So.
I'm new to these boards, and I'm part of a very small mod team developing a little (absolutely free, of course) singleplayer modification for the award winning videogame Half-Life.
We're trying to get together a tiny "soundtrack" for the mod, as music really gives the feeling for certain parts of a game.
Now we thought that the Chemical Brothers' song "Rock The House" would fit the game _perfectly_, and I'm interested if there's any possibility at all of getting a permission to use an MP3 of the said song in the mod. (it would, of course, need to be distributed as a part of the mod installation then)
I'm posting this here because I have absolutely no idea who I should contact about this, if there'd be even the smallest chance.
Information/Ideas, anyone?

'Fraid the Chemical Brothers don't have a song called "Rock The House."
However, you may be thinking of their remix of Prodigy's Voodoo People.
Also, I don't think anybody here can help you gain permission.

prevex,
What hl mod are you working on? I'm involved in the HL community. As for clearing song writes, if you really wanted to do this legally, you need to go to a sample clearing attorney. What they basically do is talk to a record label and work out a deal. I'm pretty certain that you have no budget on this mod nor any intrest to go through an attorney. If you did include the song in your mod and the attorney of the chem's record label label found out, you'd get a cease and disist letter telling you to take it out and yada yada or else they will take legal action.

As for the mod, it's called "Short Circuit".. It's going slow because of the small team developing it. We've not gone to "public" yet, because we're all too lazy to finish the mod's website with some new/current content :P
Oh yeah, it's the website that's lagging behind. ;-)
As for the Voodoo People remix, if you are planning to include a folder of mp3s in your free mod, you are actually asking if the artist/record label would like to give their music to public for free. And I'm not seeing that happen on any commercial song. You might be allowed to use a 30-second clip of the song ... not sure about that though.
(Onnea vaan modaukseen, toivottavasti jaksatte panostaa siihen koodaukseen ja muuhun, ettei koko homma knny vaan nettisivun pivittelyksi.) :D

Well, actually a clip of the song would be even better (it's too long as it is for the mod) :D
And yep, I know it'd be a small chance of getting a commercial song to free use like this.. But, umm, it'd be kind of charity wouldn't it? :)

It's not just the chems you'd have to get permission from, you'd have to get it from The Prodigy. They're the original artists. I don't know where the Rock The House sample came from. At a pinch, you could get someone else to re-write the song using that sample. You couldn't just sample "Voodoo People" though, you'd have to go to the original. It's what I'd do though, if memory serves, the Voodoo People remix doesn't credit the sample, leaving me to believe that vocal is copyright-free. Therefore, if you can find the original, you can write a new song around it, with no legal ties (except to the new artist of course, but if they don't have a record label they won't complain, it's free publicity!)

the sample isn't important, it's the whole song that would fit perfectly there.
but, what do you think, would it be legal to use a 20sec clip of the song or something?
It's still illegal, but i doubt for a 20 second sample, the record company would want any money for it. Best bet is to ring/e-mail Virgin Records, and hope you can find someone to help. Actually, the copyright will be on The Prodigy's label, XL Recordings. Just ask them!

I'm to scared to play it. I would play it if the monsters were replaced with Tulips and Roses and the plot was to water them so they didn't die, obviously you would water them with a water gun so the game retains some of its original features.
X-D Cute, the game could be called Bloom III!
You gotta at least try it! It's brilliant, and it *will* set a new standard for the gaming industry. It has the most incredible graphics I've ever seen in any game, and yes, it is downright fucking creepy. Unnaturally creepy. And it's in 5.1... it would be nice if my computer had 5.1...
My husband and I are fighting over who gets to use the computer (in jest of course) This hasn't happened since Quake III. Sad to say, he wins and I am what they call a Doom Widow.
be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle
