Just read about four people getting killed at the Pukkelpop music festival after a severe storm hit and wiped out a few tents.

I know Den_B has gone to this a few times. I hope there weren't too many others injured... :-(

Just read it on BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk...europe-14582448 - sad times, hope there's no more injuries or worse. Crazy weather.

The Pukkelpop organisation says that 5 people have been killed at the festival. They canceled the two remaining days out of respect for the victims. There is a lot of disbelief here in Belgium right now.

that is another massive blow for the pukkelpop crew after last year's tragic incidents. it was definitely right to cancel the rest of this year's festival. hope they will get back on track.

however, festival organizers must take bad weather into account and find solutions how to react to storm etc. Usually there are storm warnings in advance, so why was there no appropriate reaction to that? A similar incident has occured earlier this year somewhere in the US. What was to happen if a stage collapsed when a headliner performing in front of 10.000s???

Yeah GoldenEyes this happened at a state fair in Indiana, US just a few days ago (talked about in the bullshit thread). I can't believe this happened. AGAIN! :(

I think organizers most likely do take foul weather into account - many fests occur rain or shine - but what can't always be accounted for are possibilities for freaks of nature and torrential unpredictable wind gusts that can take down a massive stage structure (as what happened in the US). Mother nature is a cruel bitch sometimes. It's tragic though and hopefully more measures can be taken to help prevent stuff like this from happening.

Canblaster is ok, and told me that just a few hours before the storm, the sun was shining and the sky was all blue.

I talked to Obama, the sun was shining right before the storm strike.

well there have been storm warnings for thursday. I know that might be strict but in such cases a festival should partially be cancelled - even if that might be for no reason and elad to massive disappointment. still better than people being killed or (badly) injured.

I remember Main Square Festival last year there was a big storm on the first day (not as big as the Pukkelpop one but still), with heavy rain and people running everywhere. The artists had to stop playing for a moment but the storm finally stopped and no one was hurt, so the festival went on. And I'm glad it did cause if they had cancelled the festival because of that, it would have been a huge disappointement.
I mean if we had to cancel a whole festival each time there's a risk of storm...there wouldn't be any more festival !

I am not talking about a "whole" festival but to cancel a day of a festival in case there are storm warnings. And I'd rather see a festival cancelled in part than experiencing something such as happened. People like you will only begin to act once something has happened. One doesn't need to be over-cautious. But one should be able to defer his/her own interests in the interest of a group of people.

Also, certain bad weather is part of a festival. However, if weather forecasts give heavy storm warnings, one should ract and not hope that everythign was going well.

For Pukkelpop that means: had they cancelled Thursday no one would have been killed and injured in best terms. Of course people would have been disappointed for a while and then been very happy and thankful for the cancellation. The Pukkelpop head of team would have received praise and whatever. What now? Maybe Pukkelpop might not recover from what has happened and will not happen again next year. Who is disappointed then???

Cancelling just one day of a festival because of a simple risk isn't a decision that can be taken so easily. Storms are often part of such big festivas and it doesn't always lead to dramatic consequences. No one could predict something like that would happen. And what if the people who were already installed at the camping had learnt a last-minute cancellation of a day they paid their tickets for ? Pretty sure they would have been angry and some people injured.

I am not talking about usual storms man. There has been an acute storm warning by the weather forecast, predicting a very high wind speed. I am talking about these cases and not cases such as "huh, there's a bit of wind here and there". I am not talkign about a "simple risk" but a heavy thread to the life and health of individuals. Football matches are being cancelled given certain weather conditions, same applies to other sports and cultural events and so should also apply to music festivals.
