Yeah PTB is not pop music, I regard pop music as the likes of Nelly Furtado, Pussey Cat Dolls ect, not the chemical brothers.

Slipvin do you regard CWU and Surrender as pop because of the commericial success and collaberations on the albums?

Jaxx do have a more poppy edge, and although people on here are not fans I still think they are entertaining live(not as good as chems though), I will prob buy there new album.

Mylos album in my opnion is good but doesnt deserve to be that high up the list. I personally think its a classic, I really love those poppy synths and 80 samples.

May sound like I like more poppy stuff, but really I dig deeper darker music the most.

What is pop? Really... it's an honest question. Is pop a bad thing? When does a band cross over to the pop side? What determines this? Even if Push The Button was pop, why would this be bad - if you enjoy something like music why is this bad? Because the Chems don't deserve recognition and success for their efforts, because they should be confined the only the faithful few of us that frequent this board? I don't understand.... The Chems have their own style, they aren't copying anyone else, they never sound like they are compromising, they aren't afraid to go on the road less travelled, they write their own material, etc. etc. And just because it's pop doesn't mean it's always bad. I agree that there are some radio friendly songs on Push The Button, but radio friendly shouldn't always be equated with being 'pop'.
be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle

the problem is merely the word.

Slipvin means it in a derogatory manner.

I do think Push the Button is their poppiest album yet. The production values and traditional song structures make it so. This is, in my opinion, why the album is so strong. I can listen to PTB when I feel like listening to some tunes, when I'm studying, when I'm driving, when I'm clubbing, etc.

Dig Your Own Hole, on the other hand, is more track-based than song-based. I listen to it only when I feel the need for mad beats. It is a groundbreaking, incredible album, but it is satisfying in a narrower way.

This isn't to suggest that it's inferior at all (it isn't), only that it seems clear that the Brothers were shooting at different targets with each album and perhaps that they are seeking to broaden their appeal as they develop as artists.

didn't we end this discussion 'bout PTB, did we? It's definately chemical in it's style, every part of each song is typical chemical, so what's more??. It's different, sure, and not everybody was satisfied. But not even the best pop shit outhere can being compared with any song on this album. You only need to listen to the big jump or believe (SURFACE TO AIR, it's so powerful!!!) with their bleeps, sounds, patterns, instruments, nothing less but chemical. And no one that ever joined one of their gigs would call them a pop act, if yes my definition of pop would be outdated...

But i wouldn't be annoyed about some breaking jumping pumping tracks in the future like TPPR/TSU. . .
E(argasm) = m(usic) x c(hemicals)²

Yes yes yes they ARE pop! I REALLY wish they were fuckin popular in the mainstream. Just because a few radio djs play "a few" songs once in a while, does that make the chems mainstream? Damn like i said, I wish they could make the mainstream and more jerks would listen to em n they'd have more gigs n more money to tour n make albums. Tour here!!

I agree with slipvin that the album is very popish, but i dont share the disappointment he has with the album. He's just being very critical. And your always critical to the ones your close to (chemical brothers).

Dont worry Slipvin, "Chemical 6" is on its way! :D

You guys like the quotes, don't you?

PTB isn't pop, there are songs that appeal more to the radio audience than previous albums, but songs like Believe and Shake Break Bounce certainly aren't pop songs at all.

PTB is a pop album. At least 75% of the songs is pop music. Believe got that Kele Olerekekeke guy from Bloc Party, which automatically makes it a pop tune. Shake Break Bounce is used in a car commercial: pop music (although it sounds more like, yeck, r&b). The Boxer: pop, because it has Tim Burgess on it. Close Your Eyes: pop (The Magic Numbers), Hold Tight London: pop pop pop. All these songs don't have dance, but genuine song structures like the Beatles and The Charlatans. And above all: it was widely appreciated by the commerial music mass (Galvanize). Therefore: PTB is a pop album.

Dude, none of the bands on the PTB tracks are even close to pop bands.

If there was a Britney Spears song, yes, I could agree, but Bloc Party, Tim Burgess and the Magic Numbers are so far underground in the US you'd need an oil drilling rig to find them here. Zero Radio play, not even near any charts.

Also, by your thought process, Slipvin, Loops of Fury is now a pop song because it is now featured in a Nissan ad Does anyone else see anything wrong with it?

Oh, I just remembered!

How about Hoops when it was played for 3 three summers in a row for some 'red tag' car sale for some brand? I mean, that was so pop, I didn't even know it was done by the Chemical Brothers until I got CWU (my last album of their's except for PTB and BGWIO)

haha, on that note back in the late 90s, like I already mentioned, almost EVERY mtv and channel v promo featured some of the very cult dig your own hole n prodigy experience n other stuff. before these guys did the pop albums, so looking back even those are "pop", just cause they make amazing music for classy promos and ads? try asking those people who like the one min spots to sit through the entire album and love it.
