Why don't we ask Ed to induce the marketing management to think about updating or even relaunching the old/a new forum? I mean, he often (if i remember correctly) stops by and is reading some of the post here so i'm sure he's getting aware of that spambot issue! Who else is closer to the source that could deal with that? We could write him a PM. Maybe he'll responding. And if yes, we could make suggestion of what the old/new forum needs to prove for the future (edit buttons, other features etc.)...

I was thinking that too, it would be ubercool if he did do something about it, this forum is like a lifeline/home for some people[Not like thats bad], but its a shame to see it going to the spambots especially since some people have been coming here since it opened and are still here posting away. I vote 'Get Ed to beat up the spambots' now X-D

I know that people have his personal email, but they're all too afraid of bugging him.

I wouldnt want to disturb him and Tom, especially since theyre working on Chemical6 either. The consequences could be disasterious

Should give him a buzz anyway, he would say no to Darkstar, he travelled halfway across the globe to see them. :D

Why that? I think, if he wasn't interested in us, the fans, he would not looking around here and answering questions of every kind. He's not here to make selfmarketing or present new stuff. He's here because he likes it to be in contact with his fans. He propably has a open ear for that issue and wouldn't be annoyed about being contacted related to that.

In fairness, I doubt he's got that much influence over the Marketing department at Virgin Records. We've been bitching about how old this forum is for ages, and how we don't have an edit button. They must know how we feel. It's just become more pressing to get a solution now the spambots have taken over. I think an attempt to seek out the Virgin Records marketing department is the best interim plan - if anyone has their e-mail address, post it here so we can flood them with "SOS" messages, and maybe someone there will investigate and see the extent of the problem.

If a new forum was created, you can bet once the spam has taken this one over proper (after the mods leave), it would disappear off the net fairly soon. Just had a quick thought - once a new forum was created, then someone could hack this site, and stick an automatic redirect to the new one. New users wouldn't even have to read the Sticky at the top, they'd be taken straight there. It's all possibilities.

Question posed to all: A new forum would require webspace. Webspace costs money. Any ideas on how to fund the upkeep of it? Trying to run a subscription service almost certainly wouldn't work, as administering it would be a nightmare. Not to mention it would drive away new users. But I can't think of any other way, apart from huge adverts and stuff like that.

Nah, that's humbug. A simple e-mail to them and a simple post to the management. It shouldn't be much more effort. It's just about getting the marketing section aware of topic. I mean, at least we're a large target audience, aren't we?!

Dont worry about it,

Anyway, someone could try and get ed to do something? But as an alternative I think the mod user and pass should be made available for those who are willing to do it, cause I mean most of us trustworthy characters and most of you guys have met so, and more mod access means more deletion = less spam = [yay]

Isn't there like a better verison of the forum software out there. I know other forums don't have this problem. maybe it's just out dated.....

There will be a day when you'll log in to this forum and you notice everything is gone. And if it continues like this, that day will soon be truth.

i dont like the idea of moving to another board.

theres not enough new people on here as it is, and i think that moving to a new board will only confuse things further.

i agree the spam is REALLY annoying.

i think its in tom n eds interest to keep the board going - its a massive promotional tool - all the big artists/labels have some type of forum.

i think if they were made aware of the extent of the problem they could speak to someone about getting it sorted out.

Word.

It may become such that keeping this forum is no longer an option, but I think we should hold out as long as possible.

Has anyone e-mailed Virgin/Astralwerks or anyone else (besides Admin) in authority yet?

I think a new forum would have about 20-25 members (which is all that really post around here regularly anyways) and wouldn't ever really grow beyond that. Now I enjoy chatting with everyone around here enough that if we end up on a tiny little exclusive forum, so be it. But we really could do with some good new posters as well.

This board a massive promotion tool? For what??? Viagra, insurances, porn?????? Excuse me while I laugh.

When was the last time this board has seen a real new member? I mean: someone that doesn't leave after 2 or 3 posts.

I haven't voted yet, because while I feel that a new forum is likely inevitable, I still like the idea of this one - the official one and I have seperation anxiety and spam or not I am and will remain very protective of this place.

The reality is that Slipvin is probably right. The day isn't far off when we'll browse on here and get some 404 Page Not Displayed error message or whatever. Another harsh reality is that an admin skipped this stop over 2 years ago. As much as I hate to desert this place (sniff sniff) It isn't realistic to go around banking on a forum overhaul and hope things are going to go OK when the spam has been getting so bad I couldn't even go on a holiday last week, irish fan couldn't step away for 10 hours, etc. etc. without this place being infiltrated with bazillions of Britney Spears Brutally Fucked spam posts every 20 minutes.

Hacking is a bad idea. It'll all turn to shit when or if this place eventually does get an overhaul.

And we should not go around pestering Ed... I know he reads the forums but probably skips over the bullshit... I still don't think that asking Ed is the right move. Although if this were happening in a forum that was in my name, I'd want something done about it! I am sure he already knows - saw him the other day and he was poking around right before irish fan deleted some spam.

This whole thing is most aggravating. I don't know what makes me madder - the amount of spam that is hijacking the board and all our conversations, or the lack of any t.l.c. from the label to let the boards slip into such a vulnerable state.
be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle
