Happy 21st Birthday mc marsh!! Get well, then enjoy!!
I know this cake's a bit old and stale, but I've decided it's what everyone's gonna get from me clear across the baord. Think of it as like a dorky old sweater your grandma always gets you for Christmas.

Yeah, when I was there last I was 19 - got served alcohol wherever I went but maybe that was because I was with my older brother.
The thing I remember my brother and his wife getting irked about were taking cab rides. The first place they lived in New York was this really shitty part of town, Williamsburg (apparently it's cleaned up and super swanky now). Back then in 1990 you couldn't get a cab there after dark if your life depended on it and nobody in their right mind would take the subway there after dark - it was bad enough in the daytime. (ah, the memories of subway prophets and wacked out lunatics!!) I remember New Year's Eve 1990, we were downtown and needed to catch a cab back and we wanted to get an early start before teh city got too jammed. We'd hail a cab, they'd ask us where we needed to go, we'd say "Williamsburg" and the cabbies would go, "No no... no way mon" and speed off even with the rear door open. It took us nearly an hour to find a willing cabbie to take us back to Williamsburg and we had to promise to tip him big before he unlocked the doors to let us in.
Anyway, with the cabbies, it's a known fact that if you don't know where you need to be or exactly hhow to get there, they'd zig-zag around town and run up the meters. My sis-in-law had more than a few words with the cabbies just in the time I was there visiting.
The subway... that's another interesting ordeal. I remember I was visiting in 1991 - just spent the previous 3 months in the UK and was really confident with the London Underground so when I got to New York I thought, hey, I'm good at this underground stuff. I ended up on an express train to Harlem, purely accidental of course. I was sitting there and knew something was wrong as I kept zipping past all these stations without stopping. Nearly crapped my pants when I ended up where I did, being a silly 19 year old girl...

Well poo. :-// Sorry mc marsh... it's just that there was a bit of talk about New York and suddenly I felt as though I were in the New York thread.
So apologies for the thread jackery - hope you're feeling better so you can celebrate your birthday properly!
