Maybe it's because of the kind of music they play but I've always had the feeling that The Chems live sets are much louder(i.e. higher volume) than all other bands I've seen...

What do you think?

I think it depends on a lot of things, venue size and whether or not it is outdoors being a couple of 'things.'

I've only seen the Chems live outdoors. I can't imagine having seen them do a live set indoors because the sound was so intense it might blow the roof off a building. I have to hand it to their sound crew though, all the people behind the scenes. The system is awesome, it seems so perfectly balanced, no tinny sounds, no feedback of any sort, no unintentional distortion. Pure sound. Last time I saw them, it felt like the bass moved the earth under my feet. There were spasms of even more bone shattering bass that made the hairs on my arms stand on end, I could feel it behind my eyeballs. Damn near electrifying. It was a physical buzz in every sense of the word. Very loud but...

On that note I'd say one of the loudeset shows I've ever been to was Pink Floyd in 1994. A lot of time has passed since then so my memory might be hazy - but they were friggen loud! I saw them at a massive venue, the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. There were massive speakers at least 10 feet in height set up in the venue at vantage points all around. I'd say there were... 4 of these babies all together and that doesn't include the even larger ones up front and the ones in the center of the stadium.

the chems are loud!!! when ever i think about the chems playing live, that bass swoop of under the influence always gets me!!

i remember one time at birmingham academy a couple of years back. one of my ear drums got very distorted towards the end of their main set. i wasn't even that near the speaker stack. i had to turn my ear away from the speakers to stop it hurting. and if i wanted to turn my head round i had to block the sound going in with one of my fingers!! i had to watch the encour from the balcony, cos i was a little worried about being able to hear for the rest of my life!!!

then again i have been to a gig at the brixton academy in 97. where i thought the sound level was far too low, i dunno what happened that night, maybe there sound system was having a bad hair day or something??

wasn't their sound system second hand from new order??? i'm sure i read that somewhere. even if thats not true its certainly a great rumour!!!

Oh that bass swoop of Under the Influence. I can't wait to feel that again!

griffin, if they did use Pink Floyd's old sound system, that's probably why I'm having a hard time telling which show/who was louder!
