The whole ordeal is very sad. Worse still that mostly the poor were affected, they've lost just about everything. It's so hard to watch all this unfold.
The gas prices are getting to be astronomical already and are expected to rise about $1 per gallon by the weekend. 8O Average price around here for 87 octane is hovering at the $3 mark. I know we still pay less than most places in Europe, but that extra money is going to hurt those who simply cannot rely on public transportation. Glad I have an econobox but even still, it doesn't get the greatest gas mileage.
We'll see if the US government dips into its emergency oil reserves as was reported earlier today...

It is the oil companies that are making a profit in the wake of everything going on, and it's wrong. On another board I was reading about someone in Atlanta who, while waiting in line for gas for over half an hour, watched the price go up 2 times from $2.70 to over $4. (I wonder what thesouphead - who's from Atlanta - has to say about this)
Apparently the gulf pipeline which runs through the hurricane affected areas was damaged which brings oil production down a few %'s. Whether or not this damage amounts to a crisis worthy of tapping our reserves is yet to be seen.
Anyway, watching what's going on in Biloxi and New Orleans, me bitching about the price of gas amounts to a hill of beans compared to what those people are going through...

They don't "bury" their dead in New Orleans.
But I get what you mean. :P Nevermind, I'm being nitpicky.

$3 a gallon? That's not far off of half what we pay over here! That said, I *think* that unleaded petrol over here has an octane rating of 95. Dunno really, I just stick the nozzle in the car and fill her up. I need petrol, so they can charge what they like, I'll still need it :(

As of now I don't know whether to cry, bash my head in, or throw up.
This whole Katrina situation is a goddamn CLUSTERFUCK on all levels of INCOMPETENCY!!
But I'll refrain from ranting, I just had to let a little bit of anger out. I feel better now but I could still use a drink...
