yeh thats a cool controller, has lots of controllable stuff for tweaking.
depends on how youve got ableton set up though - when pausebuttonaudio dj, we like to use the session view, rather than the 'sequencer' view, so we got the m-audio trigger finger:
that we we can cue clips in using the pads a la MPC stylee, and use the 4 faders as individual level controls, as well as tweakables with the knobs.
in ableton there are 2 master outputs, so if your soundcard has outputs on it you can bus ableton to these - u shouldnt need 2 soundcards. in fact, i dunno how you'd set ableton up using 2 soundcards, im not sure if its possible, since it takes its asio drivers from one card :?
someone else might know!

i got a 90 minute video lecture of richie hawtins talking about dj technology and his careea, how hes always been pushing the boundaries to do something different. its had a bit of an impact on me!! viva technology

Ok what's the deal with using old drum loops? I notice that artists never list where they got drum samples from even though they are clearly recognisable as being from James Brown/Bobby Byrd or even ... Jimmy McGriff ... heheheheh ;).
I'm guessing I don't have to seek permission for a sliced beat as long as it contains only the drum sounds and isn't how it sounded on the original track?

Technically, you still have to seek permission, but for something as trivial as a drum loop they probably don't bother with acknowledging it in the credits. So basically, you have to request permission but don't have to declare it in the credits. If you didn't ask, you could still be sued.
However, unless it's for a commercial setting - i.e. making money from your tunes, no-one is gonna care about permissions. The Chems didn't bother with their early Dust Brothers stuff, hence why it's like gold dust now
