I recently bought me the sony mdr v55, which were about €89 in our capitalisic media store. I was able to haggle the price down do €69 which is the regular on the internet. They've got a 5hz to 25kHz frequency fidelity which is really good for that price. They're also designed to withstand 1000mW and have 105dB, so they can be used very easily with stereos and they're quite loud, too. Given the low freq band the bass turns out nice as well.

Btw, you should get an extension cord for these, 1,2m (like mine) is quite short as I experienced. But then again, I don't know in which sort of setting you wanna use them anyway.

Listening to erotic audio books.

I'm not bothered about loudness, my ears can't take major volume which I think is due to listening to my Sony Walkman too much and too loud at school.

I don't understand why you care about deep bass so much then...

Alright. I don't listen to music in high volume too, just wanted to mention it. Sometimes brobdingnagian headphones like this have high impedances which make them nearly useless for pc's and the like and you couldn't enjoy your erotic audio books that well... But it's got 40 ohms which is ok for your purposes.

I hope you know me well enough to know I was joking.

A lot of the newer headphones seem to be bass orientated e.g. House of Marley and Beats by Dre and the reviews say the bass lines can be dominating. My sub broke some time ago so I haven't had any amazing basslines in a while :( Do you reckon the headphones I bought would be ok for DJing purposes?

Well, I'm not a DJ or pro by any means so don't take my words for it. But I'd say these pairs are ok. It also depends on how you're gonna use them. Looking at the specs it seems your heads can take 1,5 Watts or 1500mW. I'm not familiar what the usual performance is that comes from amplifiers but I guess it will serve that purpose. Just make sure they won't "blow off", meaning that too much power could break its membranes. I guess you're about to do small partys (at first) so the systems there might work well with your headphones.
As for my model, the sound is really good and balanced which is essential for djing and I reckon so is your one.

I've got AKG K550 a month ago. Amazing cans, I've never heard a soundstage this wide.

I put on Surrender to see how my Sony's sounded, the bass is nuts! Very bass dominant sound which is not for everyone.

This was my face when listening to Under the Influence:

On the previous page (was that really 5 years ago??) I mentioned how I listened to Do It Again on some bass heavy headphones. Let me just reiterate that experience again on this page, a bit more in depth this time - for you and your new headphones, iggy.

When I first heard Do It Again I liked it but it wasn't red hot on the scale for me.

But when I heard Do It Again on a sweet pair of noise reduction buds that were heavy on the bass and dynamic range, it blew my mind. This might sound weird, but I was listening and I started feeling a bit rushy, and I started, erm. Sweating. It was really, really strange to have that sort of physical reaction to hearing something when I was literally just sitting on my sofa and not doing much else. It really changed how I felt about that song.

So anyway, I just thought I'd share, because I think you should give Do It Again a whirl on your sweet new headphones. The extended version if you can. :D
be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle

Since 15 years I'm listening on Sennheiser HD580

Posted Image

They don't produce them anymore, I think HD600 is it's successor.
unbelievable stage. I didn't use them for 3 years cause the calbe was broken.
Cable itself costs like 40$. But now I bought one, and I can't listen on anything else.
Great sound.

I'm looking to buy this :

Anyone tried?

Sennheiser HD 25 SP, I have a pair which I use for djing and personal use - sound is so good. Allen & Heath Xone headphones look lush as well.

I own the Sennheiser 650's. They are top notch. Not just for audiophiles, but intended for mixing on headphones. The outside ear is open like the HD580's^ so they're not good if you're listening around people because everyone else will hear your jams.
They cost about $500, but sometimes you can get them for cheaper.

Yeah I will buy the HD650's if my HD580's will wear out ;)
But since I bought them in 1997 ( looking at the receipt now - 15 years - my God) they don't seem to give up ;) Does HD stand for heavy duty or what? :):)
I have only replaced the cable 3-4 times. That's the weak part.

You probably know that, but because their open, you can listen longer with no pain.
Plus the stage is bigger I guess
Those headphones is where listening to music begins.
Can't even listen on anything else now.
Rediscovering some sounds at the moment ;)

For me it ended up being a 2 for 1 on getting the 650's: I bought them for working on music and they aim, unlike consumer headphones, to be more neutral sounding on the freq spectrum. As an added bonus, just like buying studio monitors for a hi-if system, you're getting a more accurate version of the album as it was made. It seems like a lot of headphones aim for the ol' disco smile: high treble and bass. Kinda like putting sugar and salt on everything. You can really appreciate well produced/engineered albums with something like these. You hear subtle nuances, tape hiss, kick drum clicks, etc. Funny thing is, music is supposed to have a "glued together" feel, however, with live bands that aren't overly compressed these have the opposite effect of making things more spaced out and distinguishable. In summary, buying good headphones are an essential part of listening to music. You get an enjoyment out of it that really makes you feel like when you bought an album that you're really getting everything out of it.

That's all so true! Like I said - didn't listen on them for like 3 years - what a mistake!! Currently relistening all the stuff. It's amazing how many additional sounds are hidden on well produced albums. You can hear the complexity and deepness. It sounds so better.
I listen only to electronic music - my HD580's sound perfect for it. I think your HD650's have more bass - not sure though.

I would advise everybody here to save more money and aim for those high end headphones.
It's worth the money. No regret. Sennheiser is the best choice I guess.
Next week I'll be testing Audinst HUD-MX1 (cause I'm looking for something with good quality and easy to transport) with my headphones plus confronting them with Beyerdynamics DT990.
