just got a new doubty...
sb told me when some artist left his music work, he has 50 years of 'credits'
so, if those 50 pass, everyone can use his/her music samples.
is that right? i mean, i believe this guy, but i need opinions and info.
also i wanna know how and how many $ is the penalty if u use sth without permission.
i also wanna add the Setting Sun thing, that The Beatles thought they sampled Tomorrow Never Knows, but, it wasnt?
thats it 8)

I remember tom mentioning on the Breezeblock show that they got into trouble over Hey Boy Hey Girl - and they have to shell out 30% of everything they make on that song.
Also, I clearly remember reading somewhere that u can life samples upto only a few seconds ((I think 25 or something) for media purposes - promos etc. I remember in the mid nineties the mtv and channel v promos were 90% chems and prodigy.

basically, unless u make any serious money out of a sample you ve used the chances are the owners of the licence arent going to sue you. look at schooly d (sampled for block rockin beats) - i remember seeing an interview with him and he said he never recvd anything for his voice being used in BRB!!
This one?
http://www.globaldar...nal_gangsta.htm
Where it's said:
"The Chemical Brothers? I haven?t seen the cheque yet. The first time I heard the Chemical Brothers was at home, sitting watching the NBA play-offs and they begin to show the programme and I hear, ?Back with another one of those block rockin? beats?. I?m like, ?What the fuck, turn that shit up?. I rang my lawyer and was like, ?Turn the goddamn finals on!?. They were just in the states end I spun at their gig in Philly."
Can you say which track it is where the sample came from?
E(argasm) = m(usic) x c(hemicals)²

That's sort of true, copyright sort of expires after 50 years. I think you can use a sample from something recorded 50 years ago, but you can't claim it's your own (I think, the law is very ropey around this subject)
cool...

I'm sorry. I'm from Belarus. I don't speak English very well. Please, anybody help me!!!
Some days ago i heard the part of a song "Block rockin' beats" in the video of a belarussian lottery (I can provide a link to this video).
I want to ask, if not violated in this case copyrights Chemical brothers? If violated, I am ready to assist in their defense, because I am a lawyer and also a fan of The Chemical brothers.
Thanks.

This is a rather strange situation... Andrey, let me say two things:
1) This thread has been dead for a long time and was discussing an entirely different copyright matter than the one you've brought up.
2) Is this really that much of a problem? We have a "Chemical Spotting" section for the explicit purpose of discussing things like this... it's never been a cause of outrage before. It's entirely possible they do have permission to use the song.
