They were asked a long time ago (in an interview conducted in a galaxy far far away) if they would consider making music in 5.1 and their reply was no because they found stereo challenging enough as it was. They also mentioned they wanted their music to be accessible - so even if you had a mega sound system or a ratty old boombox to play the music on, it would still sound good. I hate not being able to back up my "I read this somewhere" posts without a source but I can't find that interview... if I do stumble upon it I'll post it here.
The 5.1 topics make the rounds here on the forum every once in a while. It is an interesting topic because times have changed and just about every home-theater-in-a-box system these days comes 5.1 standard, and 5.1 is offered in vehicles (usually as an upgradeable option) as well. Headphones and in-ear monitors are available in 5.1 for mass consumption nowadays... So accessibility is not so much a question anymore.
Still though - no word on if the Chems will put out anything in 5.1. The Beatles did some amazing stuff with just a 4-track... but you never know what the future holds. For now I guess, unless the Chems come out and say something in a new interview, it's safe to assume they still find the stereo format challenging in the sense they are finding ways to push that stereo envelope in their creative process. I also don't know if they'd go back and revisit their previous releases only because they've always moved forward with their music. Aside from remastering, they don't strike me as the type that would want to take 1 step forward and 2 steps back as far as their future and previous works is concerned.
That's not to say hearing one of their previous albums in 5.1 wouldn't be amazing!
Personally, I'd be afraid of suffering from a genuine case of vertigo if I sat down and intently listened to a full album of theirs in 5.1. Honestly - as thrilling as it would be and as much as I love The Private Psychedelic Reel, I don't know if my brain could handle it in 5.1.
I'm up for whatever, though. Whatever they want to subject us to. When it comes to the Chemical Brothers I'm easy like that.
