Any one here know much about MIDI implementation? Im trying to sync up Traktor DJ Studio with the likes of ableton or cubase to run various samples. Actually its the other way around, im trying to slave up cubase/ableton with Traktor running as the master.

I know some "djs" use ableton with their stand alone tables, but im not that serious of a dj. Dj's arent really musicians or artists, but its fuuuun times 8-).

Anywho, i do not have midi connectivity on my sound card, but it does have some sort of midi interface about it.

Ya'll know of a midi proggy that emulates a midi sound card so that i may be able to do some routing??

there's also the studio tech talk for this stuff, so that non musicians and djs aren't baffled by a barrage of unusual off topic banter.

Hey Mikey, you should check out this DVD called Scratch. It's a sort of documentary, and it'll make you re-evaluate your assessment on DJ's being musicians and artists. I'm not trying to play the "I'm right and you're wrong" card, but seriously. I certainly ain't no dj, never had any interest in being a dj, and don't know much about dj'ing period. It looks like it would be fun of course but there's an awesome craft and incredible musicanship involved in the art of dj'ing. It's not just about playing records. Anyone can do that. But I do know that being a good dj takes practice, effort, skill, musicianship, a good ear and firm grasp of the craft to do it proper. Free your mind and the rest will follow. :)

as a dj in training, i can safely say dj'ing, like turntablism, is artistic

Of course, being a DJ at high school dance isn't really artistic, it's just sitting there playing some top 40 stuff and that new electric slide-like song

I'd say DJ's are more musically inclined that drummers, but not to go so far as a good piano player. There billions of exceptions to this rule like all of them. But I know from listening and my short time DJing that you can do it will little musical knowledge, but you can't be good with out it. The best mixes IMHO are the ones of which the DJ can mix songs that are very well in harmony, then know you can change the emotion by following a track with something of different keys. Say the bass line was in key of C, well why not put the next one on as Eb and raise that muthafucking energy level.

Oops, i meant to say theyre not really musicians. This thought can be argued and ill just state my point about it. Being a musician, or an artist, is about creating something out of nothing. Creating a vibe or feeling from something that isnt even there. Yes DJ's can project moods and direct parties n woot not, but theyre using other peoples material.

I love to spin vinyls and digitally mix, but i know im not being a true artist. Yes it takes tallent and artistic flair, but, its still using other people's music. Its like a radio dj, but ya gotta through a little beat matching in there. Radio djs play tunes for people, and they dont even play their own material. I prefer to be a dj/producer, and spin my own material in there.

Too many dj's act like God. And its hilarious cause they are a bunch of fakes. There are some good dj's and some deserve recognition...but theyre ego's are severely lacking.

Mikey if you love to spin and digitally mix and you are working on perfecting your talent and you can project a mood by doing what you do - and throw in your own stuff - then for what it's worth, I do feel you are a true artist and you are selling yourself short by saying that you aren't. So there. :P I see what you're getting at, but dj'ing well or artfully crafting a mix is not something everyone is able to do, but it's something that can be recognized as art, or an art form. Art is subjective, beauty is in the eye of the beholder n'all of that - it can evoke moods or get an emotional response, or it can evoke no feeling whatsoever. And art doesn't have to come from nothing - art wouldn't be art if it weren't inspired by something, yet there's different degrees of artistry of course. That's the great thing about art (and I can be an art geek so I'm up for a discussion :P )

Yeah, i totally agree with you Whirly. I guess i should say SOME djs arent really artistic musicians, just like some producers arent really either. Anyone can use pre-made loops to arrange a track. I suppose it depends how you look at it.

Whirly, you're probably the most logical person in this entire forum. Probably cuase youre like the only female that visits :P Any intelligent male would agree 8-)
