Long post ahead.....
I'm amazed that Energy 52 is at the top in a sense. In a way it does deserve it. I would have thought it would have at least cracked the top 20, but not be the big dog on top. It is a classic track that most househeads, dance freaks, electro kids will have heard/danced to at least once in their lifetime. The original feels dated, especially as Iggy put with the repeated rape/remixing. However it is a track that is 15+ years old and people still love.
I'm kinda glad to see that only 3 tracks from the last 10 years made it to the list (For the Kill, One More Time, and Pjanoo). One More Time era Daft Punk did kick start the electro kid revolution (I still think Homework is a debate in terms of actually setting a revolution with so many electronic artists hitting it big around its release). Pjanoo is Eric Prydz, he has talent in making catchy songs.....but that's it. As for In For the Kill, I like the song. I don't like La Roux, but I like this version by Skream. The vote by the public may be a nod to the Dubstep trend, but it feels nothing like a dubstep track to me. It is an ambient track then mashed into a Drum and Bass Track. There isn't that wobble, or hip hop beat on top of a fast electro melody/rhythm on it that makes up most dubstep.
As for Massive Attacks' Unfinished Sympathy, The thing is that it has had the same controversary around it since it was released. It comes from being at such a low BPM. It still has a dance rhythm to it, just really slowed down. But it has an effect on most people, like myself, to get you moving and be an iconic track in peoples mind. I remember first listening to the track after hearing the same complaints about it 10 years ago. It is not my favourite MA song (that goes to Protection) but it is one that i still love.
Now the one suprise I find on this list is Sashas' Xpander. This is a track that I loved back in High School. I remember this coming out of the late 90s trance/prog house scene. Sasha had the hot hands between this and Scorchio (which I am suprised didn't make the list of 50) around that time. Over the past few years I have not heard even a namecheck for this. For it to end up number 3 ahead of any Daft punk productions (4 if you count stardust) is quite impressive in my mind. If I remember correctly, I think this was the track he played at one of the big parties in Ibiza one year got, off the decks, and ended up dancing on the floor with the rest of the revellers and the song ended and he was still dancing not even attempting to go back to the decks (and he still had a long set left).
Other notes I'd like to make. You Don't Know Me is chessy, especially after hearing a horrible remix by one of those crap hip-pop stars of it lately (Pitbull I think). However, I still love the original. The Man With The Red Face is a track I am still in love with as much as I when I first heard it. Even with the Mark Knight & Funkageanda remix from back in 2008 I find myself in love with it. It's a track that sneaks up on you. It starts with those long bass notes with the minimal rhythm building froms high hats to eventual low bass drum while that sax plays around in the back to screw with your mind as you build. Then when everything but the bass goes away and your left with the rimshots and the stabs slowly coming in to the highs in the middle where it all comes back. AHHHHHHH!H!!!!!! Lose it every time! I have to listen through the whole song everytime I hear it.
subnote to this conversation. Cafe Del Mar is just a bar on the sunset strip in San Antonio in Ibiza. At least it was only a bar when I was there. Me, My girlfriend, and our other friend watched the sunset from the bar ths past october one night after all the major clubs were closed for the season. I went all bliss when they played Massive Attacks' Protection right at sunset. I had to applaude mother nature (and the bar) when it finally set. Good thing everyone else there did too so I didn't look like a fool.
