I went a bit mad at Record Store day yesterday. I ended up in both Rough Trade East and West (plus Flashback in Islington and Phonica). Ryno you were lucky you went to 'West' rather than 'East' at that time of day. Pulp had sold out loong before midday in 'East'. Fortunately my mate got me the Pulp one early in the day, but the payback was that I had to trek out to 'West' to get him a copy of Pink Floyd's 7" reissue of
See Emily Play. That's £15.99 for a 7". Mind you, these rare 7" RSD releases (more so even than 12"s) can get huge re-sale prices.
The one that really made my jaw drop was a double 7" by new band The Strypes (a bunch of 15 and 14 year olds). It was selling for £14 in Rough Trade East (amazing in itself), but on Discogs it now has two listings for £69.99 and £79.99,
HERE. Holy shit!
The Strypes played live at 'East' at 4.30 yesterday but I missed them as I was over in Berwick Street by then (Selectadisc) where there were other bands playing on the street stage as part of the day. Wire were the headliners around 6pm. A post punk group from the early 80's who made more interesting music as their career moved further away from punk, so it was nice to see them for the first time. When they were finished we wandered across to Phonica as 2manydj's were meant to be finishing off proceedings there, but it was just so crowded that trying to get inside really didn't appeal. It would have been really nice to get the Soulwax boys to sign their Pulp remix...
My Purchases:
Through Me - Tom Rowlands 12" (not strictly a RSD release but definitely released yesterday). Mmm touch it! I see that Kathy Acker gets a co-write credit on the label for "...Pleasure". I didn't realise that it's actually the author reading her own book, but maybe everyone else did.
After You - Pulp x Soulwax.
I Want You / City Slang - Primal Scream
The xx - Jamie xx Edits
Rolling Stones Five by Five ep That was £8.99 for a 7". I didn't realise the price til I went to pay for it. Might be a nice investment if I don't play it though.
Various - Factory records sampler another one where I'm not sure whether to keep it or sell it. The music isn't rare but its a limited run 10". And as a big New Order /Joy Division fan myself, I know how obsessive those fans can be. The resale prices on Discogs are are already listed around the £30 mark.
Enough of the madness back to reality...
