My Bloody Valentine - Only Shallow
It took me ages to get into this band, but this song and this album (Loveless) is sheer brilliance. Definetly overhyped (best album ever? no. of the last twenty years? no. really good? yes.), but can hardly be overstated in terms of importance and influence.
I can't even listen to the Smashing Pumpkins or M83 or dozens of other acts without hearing 'Only Shallow'. Dreamy, blissful verse emerges into a lurching, sireny chorus. I hear the Chems in the outro quite a bit, too.
I need to get 'Isn't Anything'. Would love if they reunite for Coachella as is rumoured (I think it unlikely; although Shields may be present with Primal Scream, as has been rumoured).

M83 - *
M83 - I Guess I'm Floating
M83 - Teen Angst
Before the Dawn Heals Us is such a great album. The production is immaculate. So beautiful, so cinematic. Right now I feel as though I'm looking down on Los Angeles from Mulholland Drive at night and it definetly feels Lynchian, like there is a great evil in the darkness hidden from the city lights.
There is no resolution in any of the songs on this album. No satisfaction, no catharsis. Every track fades out or breaks off abruptly right when you think it's going to go somewhere. This makes for a frustrating listen, but it ultimately works to good effect. As such, the album feels like 15 short vignettes of life frozen in precarious situations.
Images of urban cruelty and rural highways are evoked by the soundscapes created, which may be both serene and jagged.
'Teen Angst', to me, represents the central point of the album in that just as you would expect it to break off abruptly, it fades out and then returns, soaring majestically. Not so much angsty as yearning, the track brings memories of many a late-night highway drive or soaring above skyscrapers in pitchblack, lit only by the multitude of lights below.
