So below is a link to an interesting video about the some of the pioneers of electronic music machines. One of them, Tristram Cary, died last week and one of the synth blogs posted this documentary "What the Future Sounded Like," which is pretty interesting regardless of whether you're a synth geek or not. It's a good source of basic knowledge of how a few guys were able to create the first synthesizer, sequencer, and sampler. On top of that that made the company English Music Systems (EMS) which produced some very cool synths. You can probably guess where this is going in that 2 of the machines they created have been used by Tom & Ed frequently for some time. There are pictures of the on the Studio Equipment section (the ones with "battleship" matrix on them). One does not have to look far to hear examples of these machines in the music because immediately following No Path To Follow you'll hear an EMS making some amazing screaming noises to set up We Are The Night. Anyway here's the link:

I was just browsing through some youtube videos of that EMS synthi AKS synthesizer. It has such a wonderfull sound! Is it this synthesizer where they get all their cool bird/screeching sounds from? I'm blown away. Thanks for posting this Biff!

Yeh i saw this last year - fucking great doc. Love the part where they are performing the stuff live on stage and seeing the reactions of the audience.

It's fabulously interesting, and once again, Biff, thanks. I loved actually getting to know what made the sounds in "On the Run" by Pink Floyd. ::shivers run down spine::

Great, great fucking song.

There is also some footage of Roger using the EST machine on the Live @ Pompei DVD.

This video was really cool. I can't really say anything else.
