Mipps, I sent out resumes for a couple of office jobs doing general office work. I know it's not the most challenging thing, but it's a foot in the door to something larger maybe. And the pay. I know I shouldn't be motivated by money but the reality is, I'm 33 and I don't make enough money now to set up for a decent retirement plan. And our rent will either go up in October, and we might have to move. If we want to stay in the area we love where my son doesn't have to change schools, I need a better paying job.
My mother-in-law works for a media production company that provides the crew and supplies for advertising agencies and their clients when they go on shoots. I would really like to get in there, somehow, even if it means being a coffee gopher at first. It seems to be a stimulating environment with room to grow, and something I can learn a lot from.
Jeanie, I am so sorry about what's happening (or not happening) with your work. What a downer! It would be nice to stay in Japan, but also if you can't get any work you're probably better off going home, at least you are sort of grounded there, your family is there - maybe that sense of being grounded could be good for finding more work. Plus if you're broke, jeez, it would be horrible to be in Japan and be completely broke! Anyway, good luck with everything. I'm sure you'll be able to get work. Maybe Japan just isn't the right environment for you right now.

the production thing sounds pretty ace, a good combination of interesting work and better pay, yeh give it bash dude!!
jeanie, i guess thats one of the downsides of being freelance or whatever, if the work aint there it aint there :( what a bummer! i kind of fear the same thing happening when i try and get music work, if im having to rely on it to pay the mortgage or whatever, what happens if the people im writing for decide that my musc sucks and dont give me anymore work :? shit, im gonna be 27 when i finish being a student and im gonna have to work from the ground up. gaaaah!
too much deep thinking for a tuesday!! X-D
still, since im gonna win the lottery next week, soon money wont be an issue, and ill throw a big party and your all invited!! maybe ill even get the chems to dj for us X-D

Aaaaand on that note, everyone who's working at the moment, be jealous that you dont have a holiday to Queensland coming up, for the total cost of $180AUD return ;-)
[That's right - i finally got paid for my services to DJing at the Ballarat Grammar School Ball! I got a rediculous amount of cash for playing top 40 to 400 school kids - not only that but they gave me a LIST of the songs to play. That was the easiest cash i've ever made in my life.]

Hey congrats on the working gig! Now whenever I see Garnier products *and* Pringles, I think of that crazy Dutch girl who loves fucking excellent acid house!
Earthquakes freak me out! Where I am, we're due for a big one, a real house shaker. It's been years since we've have one that's jolted us out of bed in the middle of the night. They can be kind of creepy because there's different types of tremors, and even if it's a small quake, the closer you are to the epicenter the more powerful it feels. The rolling ones aren't so bad, but the ones that just quake like a giant has picked up your house and started shaking it around like a spoiled child does with a dollhouse - those ones are the worst. You can hear the rumbling and creaking and what sounds like dirt crumbling through the walls, and everything in your house starts coming off the shelves. And if it happens while you're asleep (which they usually do, strangely enough) it's hard to go back to sleep.
One thing that's great about Japan is that their architectural technology in earthquake retrofitting is quite highly advanced and they've learned to adapt to quakes. The buildings withstand larger and more frequent quakes compared to the travesties that happened in Turkey or other less developed (architecturally) countries...

I've pretty much grown up in California so I've been through a lot of earthquakes. I remember one of the scariest ones was back when I was in high school. A section of my school was in an old building, not up to code. By European standards of course the building wouldn't be old, but for us in California, a building made in the 1920's is considered ancient. And the windows were pretty old as well, and they had a sort of warped look to some of the really old ones. So anyway. That was where my English class was. I'll never forget, we were having quiet reading time with Grapes of Wrath, and with no warning it felt like the room started to jostle on its side. There was a massive rumbling sound and everything started shaking like wild. I've never seen people move so fast - everyone including me was under their desk in a split second and the kids sitting by the windows went into survival mode and got the hell out from under them. This went on for a good minute or so - the building just swayed and shook and you could hear the desks bouncing up and down and the chalkboard shaking on the wall, and everyone was dead silent. I kept thinking, "Oh god, I don't want to die at school!!" X-D Finally it ended and the alarms went off, so all the kids and staff at school had to go outside while the fire department came in to survey the damage. Not a whole lot of damage, but some stores in downtown Laguna Beach had their windows blown out. It was strange, because it felt like the biggest quake - but it was about a 4.0. The kicker was the epicenter was only a few miles away and that's why it felt as strong as it did.
Earthquakes may freak me out, but I really love talking about them!

Well we dont get them that bad here , or actually we do , but i think it's cause of the architecture that we feel it less. The biggest one i felt was 7.8 , and it was 250 KM west of us....that one we felt pretty strong but i never hard stuff falling of my shelves. This is weird cause the 7.8 one , the door started smashing but nothing fell of the shelves...isn't that weird. But yeah , we have earthquakes everyday here cause there a 3 ehm...plates ? Earthplates ? comming togheter underneath Japan.
And Typhoons aswell. And last time there was a Tornado but that was in the north of Tokyo and i live in the south...Tokyo is big! It was just extremely windy and rainy here...!

dint realize japan had so many tremors. guess it makes sense since they're on a big fault line.
whirly: how close are you to those houses that caved in on the coast? dunno how big laguna is really. looks like too many houses and too little land.
From where my home is, we're actually a 10 minute drive from where the landslides were - we live a bit more inland and away from the water, and the affected area is in one of the many canyons that surround the coast.
Laguna's more like a narrow strip of a town that runs along the coast about 8-10 miles from north to south, and it reaches anywhere between 1 and 3 miles inland depending on where you are. There's a lot of rough canyon terrain that overlooks the ocean, and over the years it's become a desirable place to live so the houses are built mostly with a couple things in mind: to take advantage of the view or incoming ocean breeze, and build as much house as possible on very little land. Architects will do anything to achieve this, even if it means building houses where only half of it is on actual bedrock and the other half is on steel pillars jutting out from hillsides. A lot of newer homes are more structurally sound and most have foundations on solid bedrock - which isn't a problem usually even if the houses are built close together (pretty much the norm here in S. California.) The problem with what happened in Laguna the other day is the areas affected were not bedrock. It was really just dirt (and fill from a previous landslide) that's subject to the whims of nature.
